Split Fiction, the next game from It Takes Two makers Hazelight Studios, is out this week, and is the latest example that 2025 is a strong year for co-op games.

Like It Takes Two, which won Game of the Year at the 2021 Game Awards and has since gone on to sell a staggering 20 million copies, Split Fiction is a mandatorily cooperative game. And as with its predecessor, you and a friend traverse platforming segments and environmental puzzles across a variety of genres.

Here’s when Split Fiction releases in your time zone, and a little bit about what you can expect from the game.

A map shows the Split Fiction release times around the world

Split Fiction releases globally for all platforms (PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X) at 11 a.m. EST on Thursday, March 6. Here’s when that is in your time zone:

  • 8 a.m. PST for the West Coast of North America
  • 11 a.m. EST for the East Coast of North America
  • 4 p.m. GMT for the U.K.
  • 5 p.m. CET for West Mainland Europe
  • 1 a.m. JST on March 7 for Japan
  • 3 a.m. AEDT on March 7 for the East Coast of Australia

You’re able to preload the game now, according to a blog post from publisher EA. And yes, PC players, it’s Steam Deck Verified, though if you’re playing on desktop, here are the recommended specs.

What to expect from Split Fiction

In Split Fiction, you and your co-op partner play as Mio and Zoe, two aspiring writers who visit a publishing company and end up transported into digital realms based on their writing. The gimmick here is that each writer primarily writes in different genres (Mio writes sci-fi, Zoe fantasy), so you end up traversing between science fiction and fantasy realms.

As with It Takes Two, Split Fiction cares not to commit to a single playstyle — rapidly zipping through platformer, shooter, puzzle, and stealth missions. One minute, you’re traversing a cyberpunk city full of flying cars; the next, you’re rowing a floating boat through a mystical forest; the minute after that, you’re two hot dogs on a grill, trying to… do whatever hot dogs do on a grill? We’re not quite sure what that section’s deal is. We haven’t it in action yet beyond the trailer.

Also, there be dragons.

Split Fiction will support the Friend’s Pass feature from It Takes Two, which allows you to cooperatively play online with friend even if only one of you owns a copy. And it features full crossplay across PS5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC.

Read Polygon’s Split Fiction preview for more details on what to expect from the game.
