Wired smoke alarms - no voltage detected from non-contact reader??

Recently bought house, has wired smoke alarms. They look very old. Before I replaced I took off the main housing, used my non-contact voltage detector while the alarm was wired in (pushed up to the exposed wiring), but it didn't find any voltage. Does that mean there's no power to them? Or could it be low enough to not detect it? Or something else? The prior owners did seem to change some of the other wired detectors into battery. could that be breaking the connection to others in the chain? submitted by /u/MoMoneyMoIRA [link] [comments]
