One thing about Queen Bey is that she’ll never miss with her music or her sense of style. Her latest archive pull might be one of her best yet. To attend fellow Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland’s forty-forth birthday party, Beyoncé chose to wear a playful, yet classic dress style by Black designer Patrick Kelly.
The black mini dress is adorned with gold buttons, placed in the shape of a heart on the bodysuit-like fit that hugged Beyoncé’s figure and kept her looking snatched. Longtime collaborator Shiona Turini styled his look. The Cowboy Carter artists' full look felt reminiscent of several others she revealed throughout her fifth album era, Beyoncé (2014), per dedicated members of the BeyHive online. Her choice to wear a piece by the late visionary isn’t surprising as she’s always championed Black creatives throughout her career.
Kelly’s work could be best defined by his bold, playful, and unapologetically joyful designs—much like the one seen on the 35-time Grammy winner. The Mississippi-native rose to fame in the 1980s and became the first American designer accepted into the Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode. His work is still celebrated for its vibrant colors, bold patterns, and clever references to Black cultural history, including his iconic use of buttons inspired by his grandmother’s mending techniques. Honoring his memory and ensuring his contributions are not forgotten is Instagram page @patrickkellylovelist, which curates his work, quotes, and rare archival images to preserve his enduring impact on the fashion world. Pieces by Kelly are currently available to view at the Brooklyn Museum's "Solid Gold" exhibit and at Pratt Manhattan Gallery's "Black Dress II: Homage" exhibit.
It’s only February, yet it’s already been quite a year for Beyoncé. She’s just come off a history-making night at the 67th Annual Grammys—where she took home the award for Best Country Album and the highly-coveted Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter (2024). She’s now the first Black woman to win the latter this century and the first Black artist to win the former in the history of the ceremony. And her victory lap won’t stop there, as she’s set to embark on the Cowboy Carter tour in April. After the Renaissance tour, we can't wait to see what costumes and looks she has in store ahead.
