TL;DR

  • Broken Moon is one of four maps available in the ALGS Year 5.
  • On the smaller side, Broken Moon is easy to traverse, especially for high-mobility legends.
  • Some teams are struggling to adapt to the addition of a fourth map in the ALGS Open.
  • NRG has been performing well on Broken Moon, securing 25 total points during the Winner Round 1 – Lobby 5 – Game 5 on May 1, 2025.

The addition of Broken Moon in the ALGS has provided new opportunities and setbacks for teams across the globe. While some players can quickly adapt to a fourth location in the map pool, less experienced teams often struggle with this type of versatility.

As the ALGS Open enters its second day, it’s already becoming clear who can survive Broken Moon’s harsh conditions and who might fall behind, so let’s take a look at how the additional map is shaking up the competition.

The ALGS Open’s additional map in 2025, Broken Moon, is one of the core aspects that sets this year’s competition apart from past tournaments. In the ALGS Year 4, only three maps were in the lineup, so adding another location meant that competitors needed to prepare for the possibility of being placed in a new environment.

Broken Moon is a medium-sized map with fast-paced action, primarily due to its easy-to-traverse nature. Many buildings and passages are connected to each other, while ziplines can quickly transport players to nearby locations. Legends who perform best on Broken Moon often have high-speed movement or stealth capabilities. Snipers can also be an effective weapon choice on Broken Moon.

The best legends for Broken Moon

Maneuverable or quick legends, like Valkyrie and Bangalore, perform best on Broken Moon, but any character is viable if you understand the layout and mechanics of the close-quarters map. Since much of the map is interconnected, it’s easy for quick characters to get the drop on legends with low mobility.

Many teams in the ALGS Open are having trouble adapting to Broken Moon’s introduction to the competitive map pool, but some players are taking the change in stride.

Various teams performed impressive feats on Broken Moon on the first day of Year 5’s ALGS Open. NRG’s win in Winner Round 1 – Lobby 5 – Game 5 was particularly notable, as the trio won 13 kill points during the action-packed match, with 25 total points awarded. VK Gaming came in second at 20 points, with the air-bound Valkyrie as one of the team’s core legends.

Part of NRG’s strategy was using high-mobility legends, such as Bangalore, to swiftly take out the competition. If teams want to win on Broken Moon, then they’ll need to have characters who can maneuver through the tight spaces on Broken Moon’s terrain.

By securing multiple eliminations in the day one match, iiTzTimmy and his team proved that Bangalore and other legends with high-speed abilities are ideal for traversing the close-quarters environment found on Broken Moon.

Four maps make the competition more interesting

The ALGS’ newest map is changing how esports teams practice, but it’s also affecting competitive performance across the board. Players who favor high-speed legends are at an advantage on Broken Moon, along with those who are accustomed to competing in a variety of environments.

The ALGS Open is only in its second day, but the competition has already been incredibly fierce, and the increased map pool is playing its part in making the May competition even more interesting than in previous years.
