California Picture Project Launches Star-Studded Print Fundraiser for LA Fire Victims
From the recent FireAid concert to Project Angel Food’s ANGEL ART auction, artists from Los Angeles County and beyond have rallied together for various creative-led relief efforts, supporting the many communities affected by the devastation wrought by the January wildfires. Now, a new photo series and fundraiser is joining the roster.Running through March 9, the California Picture Project is offering an impressive selection of $150 prints from 162 heavy hitters from across the creative landscape. Spanning photographers and artists to designers, filmmakers and musicians, the project features an impressive roll of names, including Gabriel Moses, Mowalola, Troye Sivan, Gia Coppola, Tyrell Hampton, Nadia Lee Cohen and many more.Founded by a group of music executives and creative directors, the fundraiser sees scenes of recent destruction, while reflecting the many artistic ties to the city. All net proceeds.of the sale will benefit the California Community Foundation Wildfire Recovery Fund, dedicated to long-term assistance of communities most in need.“When [the fires] initially happened, I think we were all shell-shocked,” Niki Roberton, RCA Records’ senior vice president of creative, told the LA Times. “We were desperate to find a way to volunteer. But we had Spike Jonze and Sofia Coppola and Dave Free, these incredible creatives that were keen to join us.”A handful of images look to the fires’ destruction as subject: “Mama didn’t raise no quitters” emblazons a burnt fireplace in Martine Syms’ “Luctor et Emergo”; meanwhile in Maddy Rotman’s “Emily Outside the Altadena House” a pregnant woman stands in the yard of a pale pink house, bringing what once was to mind. Jonze’s “Family,” on the other hand, explores the uncanny of the human-nature divide, depicting three deer on a hillside that overlooks the mirage-like smog of downtown LA.Other works explore familiar faces in unexpected, and often intimate, compositions.
