Can I build a brick pillar around an existing wooden post?
Relatively new to DIY and I would appreciate some assistance here. At the front gate of our home is a wooden fence my father and I built about 25 years ago. We have a square steel swinging gate attached. The wood is pressure treated and in good condition since we've cleaned it, painted it, and taken care of it for the life of the fence. We have recently come into a large supply of free bricks, and since neither my father nor I have ever laid bricks before, we figured this might be a good time to try to learn. Dad wants to leave the fence post in place and build the brick pillar around it since the post is level and in good shape and feels it would be strong enough to simply mount the gate to the wood through the brick. All the information I have found online seems to have the brick pillar hollow inside. I'm concerned about moisture and rot inside the pillar and I'm not finding a lot of results about wooden frames left inside of brick pillars. Any advice would be great. submitted by /u/TrickyV [link] [comments]
