Disney and Pixar Have Officially Announced 'Coco 2'
Disney and Pixar are gearing up for a return to the Land of the Dead with Coco 2 arriving in theaters in 2029. In a recent announcement following Disney's annual shareholder meeting, CEO Bob Iger confirmed that the sequel is currently in early development but plot details have yet to be revealed. Iger shared, "While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure. And we can't wait to share more soon." Director Lee Unkrich returns to direct the sequel alongside Adrian Molina while Pixar veteran Mark Nielsen is set to produce. When Coco first released in 2017, it was a smashing commercial and critical success, even winning two Oscars. The story follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who dreams of playing guitar despite his family's generations-old music ban. He ventures to the Land of the Dead on the Mexican holiday Dia de Los Muertos, uncovering an ancestral story. The film grossed over $800 million USD at the global box office. In recent years, Pixar has earned great success with its animated films, including 2024's Inside Out 2 and 2018's Incredibles 2. The films grossed $1.66 billion USD and $1.24 billion USD respectively. So far, Pixar nor Disney has revealed the official 2029 release date for Coco 2.
