Heads up: Renting from Home Depot with Clear system
Apparently Home Depot has started using a pretty extreme ID verification system, and who knows what else system, for renting certain tools. I was totally blindsided today with a requirement to enroll in the Clear system prior to renting a tool. It begins as one of those forms we all blindly click the checkbox on stating we agree with some terms we don't even read. I always at least skim those, however. I showed up 20 min early for my reservation, but this contract is probably something like 50 pages long, written by a team of corporate lawyers and thick with limitations on your rights. They require FINGERPRINTS, IRIS SCAN, AND PHOTOGRAPH, and you agree to mandatory arbitration. There's no way I, a reasonably well educated person, could possibly read and understand the entire contract within the remaining minutes before renting the tool. And there's no way in hell I'm giving my biometrics, which are essentially your best passwords that you can never change, to some corporate giant who will what, give me a year's worth of credit monitoring WHEN all my financial and biometric data is hacked. If there is an upside, I was able to find a tool rental center nearby that I never knew existed. I won't get to use my Pro Rewards perk, but it is cheaper and closer. Just beware of this new system, DIYers. submitted by /u/Last-Hedgehog-6635 [link] [comments]
