Kitchen Extension Advice – IKEA Cabinets + Butcher Block (DIY First-Timer)

Hey DIYers! I’m planning a kitchen extension into my breakfast nook and would love some advice on setup, installation, and potential challenges. I’ve attached images of my current kitchen and a render of my proposed design. Current Setup: My kitchen has two parallel walls. One side is a freestanding wall, while the other extends drywall into the breakfast nook. The drywall length is 88 inches, but only 18 inches deep due to a sliding patio door on one side. The kitchen side has upper and lower cabinets(24 inches deep) with a black quartz/marble countertop. current kitchen Extension Plan: On the drywall side, I want to add IKEA HAVSTA cabinets: Tall Cabinet (32" wide) → IKEA Havsta Storage Combination (to add some upper shelving) Base Cabinet (32") → IKEA Havsta Cabinet with Base Butcher block countertop on top of the base cabinet Medium trash can (24") in the gap between the current kitchen countertop and the new setup Peel & stick backsplash above the butcher block https://preview.redd.it/8ih6a3adieke1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=abbdb621b7e8613d18753869a8325550bd9cfd3d This setup gives me around 56x18 inches of additional counter space. Concerns & Questions: Installation: I have never done a DIY project. What tools do I need? Are there any step-by-step video guides for installing these cabinets and butcher block? Securing the Cabinets: Since the drywall is only 18 inches deep, will I need to secure the cabinets differently? Butcher Block Mounting: Do I just screw the butcher block into the base cabinet, or is there a better way to secure it? Peel & Stick Tiles: Any recommendations on durability and ease of removal? Future Removal: If I decide to remove this later, what should I consider to avoid damaging the drywall or floor? I know the new black cabinets won’t match my existing yellowish wood kitchen cabinets, but I tried to create a contrast that still ties everything together Would really appreciate any advice, video recommendations, or tool suggestions! Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/Sensitive-Spare-6613 [link] [comments]

Current Setup:

  • My kitchen has two parallel walls. One side is a freestanding wall, while the other extends drywall into the breakfast nook.
  • The drywall length is 88 inches, but only 18 inches deep due to a sliding patio door on one side.
  • The kitchen side has upper and lower cabinets(24 inches deep) with a black quartz/marble countertop.

Extension Plan:

On the drywall side, I want to add IKEA HAVSTA cabinets:

  • Tall Cabinet (32" wide)IKEA Havsta Storage Combination (to add some upper shelving)
  • Base Cabinet (32")IKEA Havsta Cabinet with Base
  • Butcher block countertop on top of the base cabinet
  • Medium trash can (24") in the gap between the current kitchen countertop and the new setup
  • Peel & stick backsplash above the butcher block

This setup gives me around 56x18 inches of additional counter space.

Concerns & Questions:

  1. Installation: I have never done a DIY project. What tools do I need? Are there any step-by-step video guides for installing these cabinets and butcher block?
  2. Securing the Cabinets: Since the drywall is only 18 inches deep, will I need to secure the cabinets differently?
  3. Butcher Block Mounting: Do I just screw the butcher block into the base cabinet, or is there a better way to secure it?
  4. Peel & Stick Tiles: Any recommendations on durability and ease of removal?
  5. Future Removal: If I decide to remove this later, what should I consider to avoid damaging the drywall or floor?

I know the new black cabinets won’t match my existing yellowish wood kitchen cabinets, but I tried to create a contrast that still ties everything together

Would really appreciate any advice, video recommendations, or tool suggestions! Thanks in advance!
