Need Help Installing Floating Shelves in Kitchen.

Hey gang, I’m trying to install 2 46” long, 9.25” depth wood shelves in this kitchen on floating brackets. The brackets have four screw holes in each bracket, 2 brackets per shelf. My initial plan was to secure the brackets by having 2 of the screws for each bracket in the studs, and 2 of the screws for each bracket in drywall anchors. My multi detector stud finder was not functioning correctly due to the fact that on this wall is the external block wall of the house, so it was not able to sense change in density as it should. I was able to identify the screws with knocking and hammering eventually. Now, when I started drilling into the studs, it was extremely difficult. The studs would go in about an inch and then become incredibly difficult to screw. No grinding noises or anything it’s just that the drill would no longer push them in. I was then convinced that I could be hitting a pipe so I pulled out the screws and they looked sharp with no metal shavings or anything like that. I eventually was able to get the screws in after drilling wider pilot holes. I then went to drill the holes for the anchors, and saw what seemed to be a pipe with a concrete nail through it. I then got super freaked out, cut a hole out of the drywall and bought a borescope to see what is really going on in here. Photo 1 is the strange metal pipe-concrete nail situation video from inside the wall. There is 2 of them and they run all the way up to the ceiling and are cutoff on bottom just below where we were planning on hanging the shelves. i was thinking this must be some protective plate as the water heater is directly on the other side of the block wall but i have called around and no one knows! Photo 2 is the stud of the left side bracket. It looks like a doubled up stud to me, with no pipes, wires or anything. Now, for the right side brackets I drilled a hole to stick my borescope in and lo and behold, a bonafide pipe. it’s on the right side of the stud from what I can tell and it’s in exactly the same spot on the wall as this spout outside. I can’t figure out how to post video of this but it’s a thick steel pipe on the right side of the stud. That is all i can see. I have no idea what to do about the shelves. Can I even drill into studs if there is a pipe next to it? is there a plate in that stud preventing me from hitting the steel pipe? As I mentioned I was able to screw all the way into the left side stud before realizing that i’m an idiot and my stud finder was not picking up metal, but it does not appear to have hit a drain line or anything, as i’ve run every water source upstairs and watched with borescope, listened, felt and saw/heard nothing. Additionally, the master bathroom is directly above where this is in the kitchen, but when water running upstairs i hear nothing coming from this big pipe? The kitchen was completely renovated a while ago, not exactly sure when, but could these just be left over from the old set up??? please help i hate hanging shelves and am worried i will soon my house!!!! submitted by /u/LateYard1888 [link] [comments]
