Neewer AS600B: A very bright LED

The Neewer AS600B is a very bright LED indeed. The magic is in its power supply that controls everything about it. Neewer gave me the AS600B Bi-Color LED Monolight for this review. It’s bright. Very bright — 99,000 lux at 3.3 feet with its provided reflector. It is dimmable from 0% to 100% with four dimming curves. The light can jump from increment to increment in linear mode or do smooth transitions using exponential, logarithmic or s-curves. This gives control when using the light with DMX controls or the Neewer smartphone app available for Android or iOS. Neewer AS600B Bi-Color LED Monolight — A heavyweight The Neewer AS600B is a hefty unit. The light itself weighs in at 11 lbs/5kg. It requires a sturdy light stand like a Matthews C-Stand. The power supply/controller adds another 8.2 lbs/3.74kg. Shipping weight is 42.7 lbs/19.4kg, including the roller case for the light and accessories. Please add sandbags to the stand. Neewer AS600B Bi-Color LED Monolight — Controls The Neewer AS600B’s controls are all on the power supply. A single cable connects them to the light. The screen shows the settings for the current mode. Power, mode and menu buttons are in the middle. The large controller/set knob it to the left. Above these are the DMX sockets — in and out and the connector to the light. The Neewer AS600B can be set using an app with DMX and 2.4 G wireless controllers. The screenshot below mirrors the settings on the light’s controls. Notice the temperature reading just below the CCT slider. It says the light is running at 48ºC/114.8ºF. The blue lines around it show that the very quiet fan is running at slow speed. Short pressing the power button on the power supply/controller changes the fan settings. The fan has four options: auto, slow, high and silent for working in video sound recording setups. Neewer AS600B Bi-Color LED Monolight — CCT/color temperature Adjusting the color temperature on the AS600B’s power supply/controller is as simple as pressing the Set button and then dialing in the value desired. Neewer AS600B Bi-Color LED Monolight — SPFX built-in The AS600B has 12 effects available from the app, DMX or the power supply/controller. In order, the options are: Lightning, paparazzi, defective light bulb flickering, explosion, welding, CCT flash, CCT pulse, candlelight, CCT loop, INT loop, TV screen and fireworks. Press the mode button briefly to enter the effects selections. Rotate the Set button to choose and effect the press down on the Set button. Neewer AS600B Bi-Color LED Monolight — Bi-color Neewer’s AS600B is a powerful, flicker-free source of light for practically any application. From the newsroom to television to filmmaking or still photography, its color ranges from candlelight at 2,700ºK to cooler open shade at 6,500ºK. It is color accurate, with a TLCI 98 rating and a CRI of 96+. The constant brightness mode keeps the light at the same brightness at any available color temperature. The maximum output setting keeps it at its brightest. Neewer AS600B Bi-Color LED Monolight — Locking the modes The last thing wanted on a shoot is for a mode to be changed either by accident or by someone wondering, “What does this button do?” Press and hold the Mode button to lock all of the buttons. Press and hold it again to unlock them. Neewer AS600B Bi-Color LED Monolight — Versatile power The Neewer AS600B runs on household current (720 watts) with the supplied power cord. The light can run on batteries, too. The power supply has two V-mount sockets for a pair of 16.8v/26v batteries (not included), making this a great light for location situations. The output is lower when running on batteries. The power supply/controller mounts to almost any heavy-duty light stand’s main column with what Neewer calls its super clamp. I wish this clamp were available separately for other V-mount needs. Sadly, I can’t find it listed anywhere on Neewer’s website. I love this super solid method of mounting a heavy unit to a stand. The 48-volt input socket and the AC socket are below the V-mount for one of the batteries. The power supply/controller with a pair of batteries is below. Neewer AS600B Bi-Color LED Monolight — In the field A location video shoot in an office needed a lot of light for the interviews. Two Generay Endeavor ML-33K COB LED lights in strip boxes lit each of the subjects. The Neewer AS600B bounced into the ceiling and lowered the contrast to make the interviewees appear engaging. The look the client wanted would not have worked without the power brought to the shoot by the AS600B. The trolley case (included) made moving this heavyweight workhorse easy.
