Nintendo has revealed that it has sold over 3.5m units of its latest console, the Nintendo Switch 2, since its launch on June 5th, 2025.
According to Nintendo, the console has become “the fastest-selling Nintendo hardware ever globally” despite online discourse surrounding its price.
When the Nintendo Switch 2 was initially revealed, and more details were shared through the Direct, fans online voiced outrage over the console’s price. As of writing, the Switch 2 in both the UK and US currently retails for $449.99/£395.99 (base) and $499.99/£429.99 with Mario Kart World included.
Despite the online controversy criticising the price, Nintendo of America went online to share its sales milestone. To compare, the original Nintendo Switch in 2017 sold 2.74m units within its first month.
Will Nintendo Switch 2 Shake Up Esports?
The Nintendo Switch 2 is shaping up to be one of the most popular consoles in recent history, but the questions remains if that popularity will extend to the esports scene.
Nintendo’s hardware isn’t typically the console of choice for a lot of professional players, even though competitive titles are available on the Switch, such as Apex Legends and Overwatch 2.
The Switch 2 will provide a noticeable upgrade for many titles compared to its predecessor, including multiplayer titles such as Fortnite. It also features more intuitive controls, such as the Joy-Con’s mouse function for more precise aim.
But the reality is that the Switch 2’s hardware still pales in comparison to other consoles, like the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, and is dwarfed by the most powerful PC’s – the most common choice for esports athletes.
However, Nintendo does boast esports scenes for some of its own titles. Super Smash Bros in particular has always been a staple of the FGC scene, with various Melee and Ultimate tournaments held throughout the year. The Switch 2’s enhanced performance will no doubt be of interest to a lot of professional players in those scenes looking to improve their in-game performance.
In addition, with more players than ever playing these games through the Nintendo Switch 2, and experiencing them through the upgraded performance, many eyes will also be drawn to the competitive scene in order to see the highest levels of play.
