Brazilian esports organisation Legacy has scored a shock victory over Team Vitality in the opening round of the BLAST.tv Austin Major’s third stage.
Heading into Counter-Strike 2’s biggest event of the year, Team Vitality was on a 30-match undefeated streak, which has now come to an end.
The result continues an unprecedented run of form for Legacy, a last-minute replacement for BESTIA, which missed the visa deadline before the event began on June 3rd. After making it past the first two stages of the Major, the Brazilians began Stage 3 with the tough task of overcoming the top-ranked team in the world.
Despite the potential pressure of facing an in-form Team Vitality side, the team opted to play Inferno in the best-of-one match, one of the French organisation’s strongest maps. Legacy immediately began on the front foot, securing the opening pistol round and successfully countering the Team Vitality defence with some perfectly timed strategy calls.
Legacy’s lead continued to grow while Team Vitality responded with a handful of round wins to end the half with a 9-3 score line. The second pistol round proved crucial. Legacy managed to overwhelm the defenders to break the economy of the French, leaving them scrambling for a response to keep the win-streak alive.
With no way to respond to the Legacy momentum, the Brazilians wrapped up its opening-round match with a convincing 13-3 victory, bringing the win streak to an unexpected end.
It is worth noting that whilst Team Vitality’s 30-match undefeated streak is over, Round 1 and 2 of BLAST.tv Austin Major Stage 3 are BO1 match-ups.
Team Vitality’s streak began in February 2025 at IEM Katowice, eventually winning the tournament. Victories at ESL Pro League Season 21, BLAST Open Spring, IEM Melbourne, BLAST Rivals Spring, and IEM Dallas saw the organisation surpass the 23-match streak scored by Team Liquid in 2019.
The longest win streak in Counter-Strike esports is still held by Ninjas in Pyjamas (NiP), which won 60 matches without loss between August 2012 and April 2013.
This isn’t the only surprise result from round one of the Austin Major. Virtus.pro defeated MOUZ in another best-of-one match. The German organisation is currently ranked second in the Valve Regional Standings (VRS).
What’s Next for Legacy and Team Vitality?
Legacy advance to Round 2 with a 1-0 record, while Team Vitality enters with a 0-1 record. Both sides will play again today against an opponent with the same win-to-loss record.
