ONE OK ROCK Goes Back to Its Roots in New ‘DETOX’ Album

Almost three years after their Luxury Disease album, ONE OK ROCK is finally back with their 11th studio album, DETOX. Coinciding with the band’s 20th anniversary, the latest release is an ode to the band’s rock roots following their more experimental phases with the last two albums. As teased by the band in an interview with Hypebeast back in 2023, DETOX is a full-on rock and roll album spanning 11 tracks produced by ONE OK ROCK’s frontman, Taka, alongside Grammy-winning and celebrated producers such as Rob Cavallo, Dan Lancaster and Pete Nappi. The album opens with “NASTY,” a hard-hitting track with a moderate tempo, followed by the more uplifting and upbeat “Dystopia,” setting the album's dystopian mood. The next track, “Tropical Therapy,” evokes a more melancholic tone, beginning with soft, echoing reverbs from a simple yet hypnotic guitar riff, gradually built up with Taka’s powerful yet angelic vocals. In “Delusion:All,” the band explores political undertones in a euphonious rock anthem, while “Party’s Over” shifts unexpectedly from an R&B-like intro to a blend of hard rock and Y2K-esque R&B pop tones in the chorus. “Puppets Can’t Control You,” a dynamic hard rock track, was released in mid-January as the last song unveiled prior to the album drop. “Tiny Pieces” starts gently and crescendos into a rich ensemble, epitomizing its grieving lyrics and carrying a similar mood to “Listen” from the band's 2017 album, Ambitions."This Can’t Be Us" continues the album's melancholic theme with a pop-rock ballad that captures the essence of lost love, enhanced by piano and strings atop the band’s classic rock ensemble. Following this, the band's optimism shines through in the track "+Matter," celebrating hope with lyrics that read like a love letter to fans.In “C.U.R.I.O.S.I.T.Y. (feat. Paledusk and CHICO CARLITO),” Paledusk’s gritty growls, CHICO CARLITO’s rapid rap verses and Taka’s powerful vocals all zealously come-together to create the only post-hardcore (and almost metalcore) track in this album. The album concludes with "The Pilot
