Water Heater Help – Electrical & Leak Damage Advice Needed

Hi everyone, I’m confident I can tackle this repair if I have the right resources, but I’m not sure if my water heater is too far gone due to the damage. Hoping for some guidance! The Setup: House: Built in 1925 Water Heater: 3 years old (installed in 2022) Location: Installed outside in an uninsulated covered room by the previous owner The Problem: Yesterday, we had no hot water. I checked the breaker and found it tripped. Thought it was a one-off and reset it. This morning—no hot water again. Checked the breaker, and it was tripped once more. So, I took a closer look at the heater itself. Turns out, the cold water inlet has been leaking for some time, and unfortunately, the water has been dripping right into the electrical conduit box. Now, there’s a lot of rust inside. I also think some wiring sleeves have rotted away in at least two spots, leaving exposed wire. https://preview.redd.it/rez81922xzie1.png?width=2048&format=png&auto=webp&s=92bf6cfb215819085f58b3c220e8129b9b922921 https://preview.redd.it/lvbvekl4xzie1.png?width=2048&format=png&auto=webp&s=1cf382e20cb1605342b60b527fb52c90752f597e https://preview.redd.it/45fc1389xzie1.png?width=2048&format=png&auto=webp&s=b1e2be5582af95521b023b5b0b24d9479d4162e1 My Plan: Remove the cold water inlet pipe nipple and replace whatever needs replacing Let the electrical components dry out Cut out the damaged wire sections, reconnect them, and use heat shrink tubing for insulation Next Steps & Questions: Does this sound like the right approach? Should I be worried about deeper electrical damage? Would it be a good idea to order replacement electrical components for my water heater? (I’ll check the model number soon.) Right now, the heater is completely powered off and drained. Any advice is much appreciated! submitted by /u/Rebicul [link] [comments]

Water Heater Help – Electrical & Leak Damage Advice Needed

Hi everyone,

I’m confident I can tackle this repair if I have the right resources, but I’m not sure if my water heater is too far gone due to the damage. Hoping for some guidance!

The Setup:

  • House: Built in 1925
  • Water Heater: 3 years old (installed in 2022)
  • Location: Installed outside in an uninsulated covered room by the previous owner

The Problem:

Yesterday, we had no hot water.

My Plan:

  • Remove the cold water inlet pipe nipple and replace whatever needs replacing
  • Let the electrical components dry out
  • Cut out the damaged wire sections, reconnect them, and use heat shrink tubing for insulation

Next Steps & Questions:

  • Does this sound like the right approach?
  • Should I be worried about deeper electrical damage?
  • Would it be a good idea to order replacement electrical components for my water heater? (I’ll check the model number soon.)

Right now, the heater is completely powered off and drained. Any advice is much appreciated!
