Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2025 heads to Paris

The 2025 Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship is heading to Paris, France, for the first time.

In addition to tournaments for Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game (TCG), the event hosts esports competitions for its Duel Links and Master Duel video game titles.

The 2025 World Championship marks a return to Europe for the first time since 2019 where the event took place in Berlin, Germany. Notably, the event would be the last to take place before the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a four-year hiatus for the season-ending competition.

The event acts as the conclusion of the 2024/25 Yu-Gi-Oh! season and will take place at the Maison de la Mutualité from August 29th to 31st, 2025.

Yu-Gi-Oh!’s most recent season began in August 2024 and features a total of 20 events that form the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series. Before the World Championship, events in Providence, Rhode Island and Quito, Ecuador will take place in May.

The season-ending competition aims to crown the top duelist in four categories, Yu‑Gi‑Oh! TCG, Yu‑Gi‑Oh! Duel Links (Speed Duel format), Yu‑Gi‑Oh! Duel Links (Rush Duel format) and Yu‑Gi‑Oh! Master Duel.

At the time of writing, only 14 competitors have been confirmed across the four tournaments taking place at the World Championship. Notable names include defending Duel Links champion Sebastian ‘Shelmy’ Villarroel and 2024’s TCG world champion Ruben Penaranda.

In recent years, the popularity of trading card games has exploded, with fans looking to obtain the most desirable cards across a range of franchises.

While the likes of Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! remain some of the most popular franchises, esports franchises have also started to expand into the trading card game sector.

In March, Riot Games unveiled Riftbound, a trading card game inspired by its popular MOBA title League of Legends. Set to launch in China in the summer of 2025, two sets of cards will be released alongside a Proving Grounds collection designed to help newcomers to card games learn its mechanics.
