Any tips for drilling into this stone wall?

Hello everyone, I am hoping to drill into this stone wall in my home (Utah, 1960s construction) to install floating shelves that will hold 40 pounds each but am having trouble identifying the stone, and even questioning if it is real stone or maybe some sort of stucco. A few questions What type of stone does this look like to you? How can I identify if it is stucco or real stone Should I go with a diamond drill bit or a normal masonry drill bit The stone wall is uneven and the entire bracket which the shelf will be installed on may not be fully flush. Would longer screws solve the issue or should I first mount a small slim of wood to the wall to help with keeping it flush then use that to mount the bracket? Open to any ideas here to ensure the shelf is mounted properly. Thank you all for your help. submitted by /u/NebraskasCorn [link] [comments]

Hello everyone,

I am hoping to drill into this stone wall in my home (Utah, 1960s construction) to install floating shelves that will hold 40 pounds each but am having trouble identifying the stone, and even questioning if it is real stone or maybe some sort of stucco.

A few questions

  1. What type of stone does this look like to you? How can I identify if it is stucco or real stone
  2. Should I go with a diamond drill bit or a normal masonry drill bit
  3. The stone wall is uneven and the entire bracket which the shelf will be installed on may not be fully flush. Would longer screws solve the issue or should I first mount a small slim of wood to the wall to help with keeping it flush then use that to mount the bracket? Open to any ideas here to ensure the shelf is mounted properly.

Thank you all for your help.
