Best Background to pick in Avowed

After you're through the character creation screen in Avowed, you'll be able to pick one out of five Backgrounds that help define your character. Your Background gives you unique dialogue options throughout the entire game and determines what you're starting weapon is. So, does your Background make a huge difference, and which one is the best to pick in Avowed? What is your Background in Avowed? Before we go too far into the weeds of the different Backgrounds in Avowed, let's quickly go over what they are. For the most part, your Background gives you access to certain dialogue options in dozens of conversations during your playthrough. You won't always be able to select one of these unique dialogue options, but they do come up fairly often and lead to some interesting dialogue from the character you're speaking to that you wouldn't have heard otherwise. Your starting weapon is available in your inventory right away, but you'll be able to pick it up five minutes into the game. While this might sound like a big deal, it doesn't have to be. Just because you choose a specific Background doesn't mean you're limited to a certain weapon class or combat style. If you pick a Background and get a melee weapon to start, you can easily swap to a ranged weapon as soon as you get access to one in Avowed. Of course, you can choose to stick with your Background's preferred weapon if you really want to get into the RPG side of things, but that's entirely optional. Finally, the last element to your Background is a backstory for your character. Every Background has a unique backstory you can read through during the character creation process. This doesn't play any role in the gameplay of Avowed, so you can pay as much or as little attention to it as you want. All Backgrounds in Avowed Now that you understand a little more about how Backgrounds work, we can talk about each one. There are five to choose from in Avowed, and all of them have a different name and backstory. You can see them all below: Arcane Scholar (starting weapon: Dagger) Court Augur (starting weapon: Mace) Noble Scion (starting weapon: Sword) Vanguard Scout (starting weapon: Single-Handed Axe) War Hero (starting weapon: Spear) Best Background to choose in Avowed The Background you choose doesn't play a huge factor in Avowed's story. Screenshot by Destructoid Truthfully, your Background doesn't play a major role in the grand scheme of things. While it does determine your starting weapon, you'll find just about every available weapon in Avowed by the first or second hour of your playthrough. This includes wands for spellcasting, a pistol and rifle, and plenty of stronger melee weapons. The main reason you might want to select a specific Background is you resonate with its backstory. I chose Vanguard Scout because I liked the idea of being a trusted operative of the emperor who has skills both in and outside of court. However, every Background starts the game the same way, so the backstory is just for you to keep in the back of your mind throughout the story. Usually, the unique dialogue options for every Background stem from its backstory. So, if you choose the War Hero Background, you'll often see dialogue options that talk about bravery and not backing down from a fight. Overall, if you want to stick true to the RPG elements of Avowed, then you want to pick the Background that offers the most appealing starting weapon and backstory to you. Out of all the starting weapon options, the Mace is arguably the best choice, as it features high damage and a solid attack rate without costing too much stamina. However, the Sword and Axe are strong as well if you want traditional melee combat. The Spear and Dagger are more niche weapons that you can use to your advantage, but they don't make for particularly great every-fight options in Avowed.
