Citizen Sleeper is also a solo board game now — and it’s free

Citizen Sleeper and Citizen Sleeper 2 already have the feel of a tabletop role-playing game, or maybe just a really good book with some choose-your-own-adventure elements. Now, series maker Jump Over the Age has made it official: Citizen Sleeper has a solo board game version, downloadable for free on itch.io. Called Citizen Sleeper: Spindlejack, the game requires 10 six-sided dice to play, plus a pencil and eraser. The game’s itch.io page includes two documents for players to download and print out; the first is a pamphlet with the game’s rules, and the second document includes a map and a playsheet.

The game doesn’t appear to be quite as story-heavy as the video games, as it focuses more on the mechanics of being a Spindlejack — which is a futuristic delivery courier from the series’ sci-fi world of space stations and intergalactic adventures. (Citizen Sleeper 2 players will recall the character Kadet, the Spindlejack who serves as the inspiration for this game.)

Here’s the official description from Jump Over The Age:

On the Far Spindle, in the Starward Belt, Spindlejacks are notorious. Slicing across the station with their custom airbikes, they courier messages, packages, and anything else too sensitive to be fed into the station’s crumbling and haunted networks. Sharing the cavernous transit tunnels with hulking cargo haulers, they are also widely assumed to have some kind of deathwish. But, as one of their number, you know it’s the rush, the competition, and the community that keeps you riding.

Again, this is a solo game, so you don’t even need to deal with the typical adulthood nightmare of scheduling a board game night with your friends to enjoy it. You can just dive right in and “navigate randomly rolled intersections, run deliveries, upgrade your bike and become a legend on the station of the Far Spindle.”
