Design ideas for sectioning off an open kitchen

The best I could come up with so far is to build a half wall where the blue lines are on the top image and then use a baby gate to block off the opening. This solves the problem however I'm afraid it will look odd. I'm looking for ideas to accomplish the goal with a little more grace if anyone has any thoughts I would be so appreciative.
