New music isn't the only thing The Weeknd is releasing in 2025.

The Canadian artist is diving deeper into the film industry, taking on his first lead role in a feature film after playing in HBO Max's The Idol in 2023 (and playing himself in 2019's Uncut Gems). This time, though, the film intertwines with The Weeknd's music—more specifically, his latest album—which shares the name of the new film: Hurry Up Tomorrow.

Directed by Trey Edward Shults, the psychological thriller follows a musician (played by The Weeknd) plagued by insomnia, whose fateful encounter with a stranger—played by Jenna Ortega—sets off an odyssey that slowly fractures his grip on reality. Adding to the stacked cast is Barry Keoghan who steps in to further complicate the already unsettling narrative.

Unlike a typical musician-turned-actor role, this isn’t just a film starring The Weeknd—it’s an extension of his artistic world. The film is tied to his sixth studio album (also titled Hurry Up Tomorrow) that was released on January 31, making the film’s soundtrack an integral part of the story’s fabric. The Weeknd, who co-wrote the screenplay with Shults and Reza Fahim, has already described the experience as an introspective and cathartic process, further blurring the line between his real-life persona and the tortured artist he portrays on screen.

Beyond the film’s premise, Hurry Up Tomorrow signals a new phase in The Weeknd's evolution as a multidisciplinary artist. Paired with Shults’ signature atmospheric tension, the result promises to be a moody, immersive experience that sits somewhere between dream and nightmare. It builds on his previous body of work that's heavily inspired by film, evident in titles like "After Hours" (a play on Martin Scorsese's film) and music videos like "Save Your Tears."

Set for release on May 16, 2025, Hurry Up Tomorrow's first trailer is set to premiere on YouTube at 12 p.m. EST. Watch it live here.
