Marvel Rivals players might be tempted to buy a skin from the in-game store to stand out from the crowd, but some fans have criticised how NetEase has been designing characters and skins with similar traits.

Microtransactions are an essential source of revenue for a free-to-play game, which has prompted many fans to wonder why so many skins lack uniqueness. From character costumes, designs and more, Esports Insider tackles whether or not Marvel Rivals has a skin design issue.

A post on Reddit has prompted discussions online after criticising Marvel Rivals’ “lack of visual clarity,” using the Phoenix Knight costume for Moon Knight and Adam Warlock’s Blood Soul skin as references.

It’s not the only instance that users have highlighted in the discussion thread. The top comment remarks about the recent Vanguard addition, Emma Frost, who debuted in Season 2, and how similar she was to other white and blue female blondes, such as Invisible Woman and Cloak & Dagger.

In a game with so many characters, there’s bound to be some overlap when it comes to design and colour schemes. However, this may pose a problem for some users who have issues with their eyesight and find it difficult to distinguish certain characters from one another.

“I don’t have this issue, but my friend does. She can’t differentiate because her eyesight is terrible. Having some clarity isn’t a bad thing.” One user wrote in response.

Other threads online have highlighted a potential skin disparity issue within Marvel Rivals, with one post complaining that characters like Scarlet Witch have an abundance of costumes. Several responses have also criticised that Scarlet Witch herself only has red skin.

Marvel Rivals has been no stranger to controversies when it comes to its costumes, such as the drama back in April regarding Dr Strange’s Multiverse of Madness skin.

There was also criticism online from several content creators in response to Marvel Rivals bringing back Season 0 skins to the store.

In a post online, Twitch streamer and current Marvel Rivals esports player, ‘Bogur‘, said: “I don’t think bringing back these exclusive skins so soon after the release is a good idea because it makes them less unique. I don’t mind them bringing back skins, but wait a bit more before you do it.”

Since its launch, Marvel Rivals has been experimenting with new ways to offer skins, such as the combat chest in Season 2.5. However, it hasn’t always landed as they intended, and sometimes brings more problems than anticipated.

When it comes to design visuals, clarity has become a growing concern for many players, but that’s not to say that fans haven’t enjoyed some of the more recent additions. Fans are enjoying the ability to customise their characters, but some variety would not go amiss.
