Perplexed with gfci installation

I am unable to get the wiring right with the installation of a Leviton GFCI in the kitchen. There are four wires (2 black and 2 white) that appear to come from the same conduit. One of the white also has black electrical tape on it. The GFCI is on the same circuit as lights in an upstairs bedroom and some exterior lights, all of which were added as part of a renovation by the prior homeowner’s contractor. I tested the wires and know which black wire is the line. I made the assumption that the white wire with the black tape was the corresponding neutral and wired it that way. I then attached the second black wire to the load (gold screw) and the second white wire to the load (silver screw). Wiring it that way didn’t allow me to reset the GFCI. So, I switched the white wires. Same result. Other possible clues: The lights on the same circuit do work. And, the reason I’m replacing the gfci is that I couldn’t get the original gfci to reset. Sure, I will call an electrician if need be, but I am pretty handy and it frustrates me that I can’t figure this out myself! I’m hoping that smarter minds can help me get this figured out. Can you help me with this? submitted by /u/hadmadsuperdad [link] [comments]
