Philippe Malouin Creates Sofa Complete With "Hoodie" for Hem
British-Canadian designer Philippe Malouin has created a new sofa for Swedish brand Hem, which is dressed in a plush upholstery inspired by the comfort of hoodies. Named the "Great Sofa", the design is generous in its size, with a relaxed, enveloping form that - although looks very squishy – is actually structured and supportive. The crowning jewel, though, comes in the form of its upholstery, which sees Kvadrat textile bonded onto foam, and elasticated corners (similar to that of a bed sheet) that secure it across the base. Thanks to this design detail, the sofa appears "lived in" already, and rather than becoming a piece of furniture nobody dares to use, it invites visitors to slump, sit, or sleep. "The sofa strikes a balance of understated elegance and distinct character," the brand says. "Rather than embracing an overtly sculptural form, it features a familiar silhouette that feels inviting and effortlessly lived-in. The result is a piece that seamlessly integrates into any home – a place to unwind, connect and relax."The Great Sofa marks the latest chapter in Hem's collaboration with Malouin. To date, their partnership has seen him create the Chop collection of metal furniture, and the Bookmatch bench and tables. "His progressive design spiritperfectly embodies the spirit of our mission," said Hem Founder and CEO, Petrus Palmér.Set to launch during this year's Milan Design Week in April, the "Great Sofa" will be presented at the Capsule Plaza space, alongside a corresponding exhibition contemplating "What is this Hem?"It will go on sale on the Hem website on April 17, with prices starting at €3,998 ($4499 USD).Click here to view full gallery at Hypebeast
