Remodeling wood deck to composite, question on posts
Have an old wood deck i am remodeling to composite decking. Decking is down, first time doing this. We are now at the posts and railing. The original posts were 6X6 and huge. I was silly and planned on keeping them and did the decking without removing them. They are so old though we are now replacing them with 4X4. What is the best option for anchoring these? So far I see two options as a complete newbie. Option 1: Replace 6x6 posts as is with 4x4, the posts hang below the decking and are anchored below directly to joists and frame of deck. Option 2: Replace composite decking where I did the cut out to fit original 6x6 post with uncut composite and directly anchor the posts to the composite deck flooring with the base anchor kits that bolt directly into the flooring of the deck? I'm a complete newbie. Pretty sure Option 1 is a bad idea but it's what the original builder of the deck did. Option 2 seems more secure and modern but I'd have to replace some of the decking. Any help? submitted by /u/11912121121218211919 [link] [comments]
