What is the Analogue 3D and why should Nintendo fans be excited?

As an aging gamer myself, nostalgia is something that's always going to make me sit up and pay attention. Maybe this is why I keep going back to Streets of Rage 2 when the mood strikes. And the mood strikes quite a lot. It could also be why I'm excited about the Analogue 3D. If you're a fan of Nintendo, specifically the N64, this is one device you may already be familiar with. Sadly, the company has recently announced that shipping of the Analogue 3D system has been delayed. Originally scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2025, it's now aiming for a July launch. No reason behind the delay appears to have been given, but if you've pre-ordered one, Analogue says it will still be honored and that "no action is needed." If, however, you decide you want to cancel your order, you can do so and receive a full refund. So what is the Analogue 3D? https://twitter.com/analogue/status/1846567133788147838 We've actually spoken about it in the past, but I feel it's worth a refresh. If you're not aware of it, the Analogue 3D is essentially a reimagining of the Nintendo 64. It's a means of preserving video games of yore by being compatible with N64 cartridges. To that end, it's one step up from an emulator because it allows you to play the original games. And because the system itself is modern, it comes with all the trimmings you'd expect from a current-gen gaming machine, such as 4K resolution, built-in Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth capabilities. Not only is the Analogue 3D designed to look like the Nintendo 64 console, but it also boasts four controller ports for split-screen multiplayer (remember that?). Some consider the original the gold standard of multiplayer. It also has a brand-new wireless controller, distancing itself from the old-fashioned and weirdly shaped one from the original N64. That might be the only thing that will pull you out of that nostalgia trip, but then some may see it as a blessing, given the OG is typically seen as one of the most unintuitive controllers in gaming (well, except maybe for the Nintendo Power Glove). The Analogue 3D will also come bundled with its own operating system. Called simply Analogue OS, it's a redesign of one the company already has and is "loaded with features uniquely crafted for N64." While very much a product of its time, the Nintendo 64 was one of the best consoles of all time, partly because of its roster of games. With classics like Mario 64, GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, Diddy King Racing, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and decent ports of Quake and Doom, the mid-to-late 1990s were a pretty exceptional time to be a gamer. But then, maybe I'm being biased. The post What is the Analogue 3D and why should Nintendo fans be excited? appeared first on Destructoid.
