Bungie extraction shooter Marathon finally set for full reveal after community solves ARG

The next game from the makers of Destiny and Halo is finally set for a full reveal this weekend after a lengthy alternate reality game over the last few days. Marathon is a new entry in Bungie's 1994 release of the same name, this time with an extraction shooter twist and some of the freshest aesthetics in a game I've seen in a very, very long time. And that's enough to get almost any gamer excited just by how pretty it all looks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZUv1-qR1Aw After the game's community came together over the weekend to hunt clues and solve puzzles released cryptically by Bungie, the studio finally confirmed that the full gameplay reveal of Marathon will take place this Saturday, April 12, at 1pm ET. "Marathon is a team-based extraction shooter and the first completely new project from Bungie, the creators of Halo and Destiny, in more than a decade," Bungie said. "Set on the mysterious planet of Tau Ceti IV, Marathon will see players inhabit the bodies of Runners, cybernetic mercenaries who have been designed to survive the planet’s harsh environments. While exploring the lost colony that once inhabited the surface, players will search for valuable loot including new weapons and gear." The game sounds like it will be part extraction shooter, part hero shooter, with each Runner having their own ability set, customizations, and more. But other than that, the game has been shrouded in secrecy and very little information since its debut trailer almost two years ago. Since then, so little was heard about the game that worry began to spread that the title was going through some development hell, or worse, set to become another target of layoffs or cancellations in a recent wave of both under PlayStation. Sony purchased Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022, likely banking on some big success from Marathon on top of continued live-service sales in Destiny 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckI_m8bbXfw As a Destiny 2 player with well over 2,000 hours in the looter-shooter game, I am very excited to see what Bungie has been able to come up with in a different genre, with a truly unique art style. If the gameplay loop is addicting, along with Bungie's trademark solid FPS gunplay, then Marathon could be a big game to keep an eye on this year and beyond. The Marathon gameplay reveal live stream kicks off on April 12 at noon ET on Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok.
