Closet Makeover - After and Before
About a year ago, our master bedroom closet became my latest project. Initially, the closet, which is a small walk-in closet, had one large wire shelf on the longest wall and two short wire shelves across from that. I, in a moment of apparent brain fog, piled my entire wardrobe onto the large wire shelf. Predictably, this collapsed. So, I decided to re-do the closet and build some pre-fab closet organization systems. I used the Closet Maid system from Lowe’s. I had wanted to use the IKEA system, but our closet measurements were awkward and I couldn’t find a combination that would work. I mapped it out on paper and spent about four hours in Lowe’s staring at the options. Ended up going with two middle organizers, adding a couple of drawers to each, aligning the shelves, and buying an extra couple of rods so that we could maximize hanging space. Hurdles: -my closet has a thick, one-inch wide trim around the base of it and I had no idea how to remove it or cut into it, so I could bolt the organizers to the walls. So, I got a piece of one inch thick wood cut into four pieces and bolted those to the walls. I then bolted the closet organizer to each of the wood panels, which I painted the same color as the closet walls, to disguise them as best I could. -I had no tool to cut the metal rods down to size and had to beg the man at Lowe’s to take mercy on me. He did thankfully, and cut them down so they’d fit in the space I had. -I struggled to get the tops of the units onto the bottom pieces of the organizer since I was doing this alone. It would have been an entertaining watch. -one (ONE) of my drawers doesn’t soft close perfectly. It needs a little extra push. I couldn’t figure it out and I did not have the energy to take it apart. This was all done in one weekend. Total cost about $500, including paint, closet organizers, drawer additions, shoe rack, and a lot of curse words. submitted by /u/RobertHSmith2012 [link] [comments]
