Emirates Boeing 777 Stranded In Iran, As Airspace Closes Indefinitely

It goes without saying that geopolitical factors can complicate airline operations, and here’s the prime example of that, as flagged by PYOK.

Emirates flight landed in Tehran, then airspace closed

In recent days, we’ve seen a larger than usual amount of unrest in the Middle East, as Iran and Israel exchange missiles. This has caused airspace closures, and that always complicates airline operations in terms of the routes that they can operate.

However, what happened to an Emirates flight is particularly noteworthy. On Friday, June 13, 2025, Emirates operated its typical flight from Dubai (DXB) to Tehran (IKA), with flight number EK977. The flight was operated by a 13-year-old Boeing 777-300ER with the registration code A6-EGE.

The 744-mile flight departed Dubai at 2:27AM, and landed in Tehran at 3:44AM, a little over two hours after departure (there’s a one hour time change between Dubai and Tehran). At this point, Israel started firing missiles toward Iran, so Iran issued a NOTAM, closing its airspace.

Iran’s airspace closed after Emirates’ flight

As a result, Emirates’ return flight to Dubai was canceled. Nearly three days later, the plane is still on the ground in Tehran. While there had been talk of Israel launching an attack against Iran, there was no exact timeline, so airlines like Emirates were caught off guard.

While some airlines have avoided Iran airspace for quite some time, that’s not the case for Emirates, which has used the country’s airspace, and even pretty consistently operated flights there. After all, connecting the region is a large part of what the Dubai-based global carrier does.

This can’t be a good situation for the crew

Emirates crews come from all over the world, and it’s normal for them to fly to destinations in the region that many of us might consider to be “scary,” or at least a bit off the grid. In many situations, they’re just doing direct turns, so they don’t even leave the aircraft.

Presumably these Emirates crews were expecting to just turn right around after working a short night shift, but in this case, the situation obviously got much more complicated. With airspace closed, presumably the crew has been stranded in Tehran, which can’t be ideal.

Officials in Israel and the United States have stated that the conflict with Iran will take “weeks, not days,” so that suggests that getting the jet and the crew out of the country might not be so easy. Hopefully Emirates has another way of getting the crew out of there sooner.

On the plus side, up until now there has been no direct attack or threat on Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport. But still, this has to be quite an uncomfortable situation for all involved, especially with tensions still escalating.

An Emirates Boeing 777 is stranded in Iran

Bottom line

An Emirates Boeing 777 is currently stranded in Iran. On June 13, Emirates operated its typical early morning flight from Dubai to Tehran, though in the short time the plane spent on the ground, Israel fired missiles at Iran, and Iran closed its airspace.

As a result, Emirates canceled its return flight, and on top of that, one would assume that the crew is stuck in the country, with the airspace closed. Most importantly, hopefully the crew is able to get out of Tehran as quickly and safely as possible.

What do you make of this stranded Emirates 777?
