Game developer SNK has announced the SNK World Championship 2025, headlined by a $2.5m (~£1.8m) Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves tournament.
Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is finally here after decades of waiting for another entry in the series. After the most recent beta, the FGC has been hopeful about the game, noting its fun style and mechanics. Now, a massive tournament has the FGC even wondering if it will overshadow other popular esports titles in its genre, such as Street Fighter 6.
SNK World Championship Hypes Up the FGC
The SNK World Championship 2025 was just announced on X (formerly Twitter), a tournament featuring SNK’s fighting games. While the full lineup, date and location have not been revealed yet, SNK did highlight that Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will have a huge prize pool for its first big tournament: $2.5m (~£1.8m) with $1.5m (~£1.1m) on the line for the champion.
This is a record-breaking amount for the fighting game esports scene, even beating the Capcom Cup Pro Tour’s $2m (~£1.5m) prize pool and $1m (~£750,000) grand prize. Numbers like these give the fighting game community hope, since a lack of publisher support has been what’s held many scenes back in the past.
In fact, some in the FGC now wonder if Street Fighter 6 pros will hop over to Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves to dominate the fresh esports scene in an attempt to take the massive prize. This wouldn’t be unheard of, with Counter-Strike pros switching to VALORANT and Overwatch 2 pros swapping to Marvel Rivals due to the new games’ hype.
With so much money on the line, the SNK World Championship 2025 is sure to inspire FGC pros to grind City of the Wolves throughout the year. There will likely be qualifying tournaments leading up to the championship, which is said to be in ‘late 2025.’
SNK states that the schedule, game lineup and prizing will be shared in more detail soon.
