First shared fence repair/replacement as a home owner:advice
Owned our home for 2 years now, tornado damaged a shared fence with a property that has a management company (owner decided to rent it out). We went through the fence repair process in a different state as the renters & neighbors who owned the house (basically now we’re in the opposite shoes). There’s one post & (2) 8 foot panel sections damaged to where it needs to be repaired but not enough to outright NEED to replace the whole run (89 LF). We have 2 dogs & a small child. Neighbors have small children. I’d prefer to just replace the fence (super weathered, original 18+ year fence to my knowledge, mold & algae abundant from humidity, shadow box style pickets, hornets nests in the gaps at the back of the yard, stringers are screwed into the sides rather than the faces of the posts at a horrendous angle all around) however apparently the management company decided they are going to repair the fence (without consulting me despite me calling that office twice, emailing them once & going in person once in a ten day period altogether). We’re military so we have the labor squared away at basically beer & pizza from the soldiers in the company. I’ve been trying to get in touch with the homeowner (through the management company as I don’t have the homeowner’s contact info) to work out a “hey if you want to cover materials, we will take care of the labor” & got 2 different material quotes in preparation for this conversation with the homeowner that is apparently not gonna happen. My need for advice is: how should I go about this with the unwanted repair? I don’t want to pay for a repair on 16LF of my fence to just have the rest of the fence blow away in hurricane season (coastal state) & pay for another repair or get a “well NOW we have to replace the fence” call from the other homeowner. submitted by /u/lunatic25 [link] [comments]
