Gore Magala makes a triumphant and terrifying return in Monster Hunter Wilds. First introduced in Monster Hunter 4, the flagship monster is as deadly as ever, making use of its aggressive nature to inflict the challenging Frenzy state.
Whether or not you’ve fought the creature in the past, there’s a lot to keep in mind before your confrontation. This guide covers the Gore Magala weaknesses and resistances so you can prepare accordingly, where to find it, and the best strategy to defeat one of the tougher monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Gore Magala location

You’ll first encounter Gore Magala in Chapter 5, during the “A World Turned Upside Down” main mission. As such, all you need to do to unlock the monster is progress through the main questline. In case you’re only getting started, the chapter takes place during the High Rank portion of the game.
Gore Magala only roams around the Cliffs biome, and can usually be found around Area 16. Since Gore Magala is a flying monster, it’s likely to move, so keep an eye out on the map.
Keep in mind that in Monster Hunter Wilds, tracking monsters isn’t really a prominent feature. Except for a few first-time exceptions, you can use the Environment Overview screen to see if your target is roaming around the map. If not, exploring its corresponding biome(s) for a few minutes usually does the trick — you’ll see a notification on screen announcing its appearance. Worst case scenario, you can speak to Alma and post a hunt for it. For better or worse, the process of finding a monster is much more streamlined now. If you find tracks or other monster residuals on the ground, you can loot them for materials.
How to prepare for Gore Magala
Gore Magala is part of the main story of Monster Hunter Wilds. As such, its encounter is likely to fit your Hunter Rank at that corresponding moment. Since the encounter occurs during a main mission, you’ll be thrust into the fray after the introductory cutscene. As per usual, whenever you’re asked if you’re ready to depart, make sure that you’re carrying regular and mega potions with you. If you’re short on the latter, take a lap around the biome and loot any honey you come across.
In addition, don’t forget to eat — you can use the portable BBQ to grill a meal. Increasing your health and stamina is essential, as Gore Magala is a formidable creature. Investing in defense is a good strategy for this encounter, and you can find some recommendations in our list of best food buffs.
For later encounters, carrying a few Torch, Thunder, or Dragon Pods will be beneficial — if either you or one of your teammates have a ranged weapon with Flaming, Thunder, or Dragon Ammo, even better. In addition, make sure to grab some earplugs for the monster’s constant screaming.

For details about what to expect in terms of attacks and general behavior, the following section has you covered.
Gore Magala attacks and strategy

Gore Magala tends to stay close to the ground, but its aggressive nature is relentless. Expect the monster to always be trying to charge against you and trying to close the distance with any nearby hunter.
If its wings are open, which make them look more like a cape, you can expect Gore to be quite agile in its movements, flying rapidly upwards and landing towards you for an attack. Something to keep in mind is that Gore’s attacks usually include multiple movements, meaning that if you don’t dodge in time, you might be “stuck” in the subsequent animations and be dragged with the creature, receiving more damage.
The upside of the wings being so big is that they’re an easy target. Which is great, considering both wings can be broken. In general, you should be trying to face Gore Magala from the front. The monster is quick to react whenever somebody attacks its rear end, especially the tail, with a tough counter where it swings its claws around while turning. Sure, it might try to bite you, but it’s easier to see coming.
If you see Gore’s wings going purple, be careful, as this indicates Frenzy. If the Frenzy virus takes effect, you’ll temporarily take more damage, and will no longer regenerate health naturally. To counter this, you can use a nulberry or a hot drink, so make sure to grab a few for your pouch. If you have access to the antivirus skill, even better, but the alternative methods will do just fine.
During this state, the monster will gain a few more attacks. Most of its regular moves will leave a cloud of sorts that can kick the virus into effect. It’ll also be more prone to charge, as well as do ground-slam-style moves. If it uses its claws, expect multiple attacks in quick succession.
Alongside the usual wound control and dodging attacks as much as possible, remember to use traps. The key is to try and get the monster to ground as often as possible to make it easier to attack. If it’s spending a long time in the air, set up a trap and bait it toward you. If you can time a dodge just right, they’ll hit the trap instead. Both shock and pitfall traps will do the trick.
