TL;DR

  • Marvel Rivals Season 2.5 arrives on Friday, May 30.
  • The newest hero joining the game is Ultron, in the Strategist role
  • A new convoy map named Hellfire Gala: Arakko will arrive.
  • A new seasonal event, Cerebro Database II, begins.
  • There are a lot of balance changes and a Jeff and Thor rework.

The latest Marvel Rivals update delivers a new hero, new map, event, changes, reworks (we’ll get to Jeff and Thor), a fairly extensive list of buffs and nerfs, and generally the attention to content and tweaks you’d expect from one of the hottest live service titles.

There’s a lot of information to keep on top of, and a fair bit of it will impact Marvel Rivals gameplay for better or worse throughout season 2.5 (and perhaps beyond).

Keeping things balanced and engaging is something that developer NetEase Games is committed to. However, Marvel Rivals Season 2.5 delivers changes that ignite debates on hero viability and the emerging meta, even ahead of it going live. So there’s plenty to talk about. Let’s start with the arrival details.

Marvel Rivals Season 2.5: Release date & time

Marvel Rivals Season 2.5 update arrives seven weeks after Season 2 on Friday, May 30. The update is expected to begin rollout at 2 AM PDT, with servers expected to be back online around three hours later at 5 AM PDT.

All servers across Marvel Rivals platforms will be unavailable during the update, and these are the regional times for the completion of the update:

  • West Coast US – May 30, 5 AM PDT
  • East Coast US – May 30, 8 AM EDT
  • Central Europe – May 30, 2 PM CET
  • United Kingdom – May 30, 1 PM BST
  • Japan – May 30, 9 PM JST

This season, Marvel Rivals 2.5 release arrives seven weeks after Season 2. It’s also six weeks before the end of the Season 2 battlepass, which indicates a second week of July arrival for the start of the next Marvel Rivals season.

Marvel Rivals Season 2.5: New heroes

As we’d expect, the Marvel Rivals heroes list gets a boost in Season 2.5, but with the arrival of one hero, none other than Ultron. The supervillain aptly arrives as a Strategist (which we love, by the way) and plugs two big holes that will help out your allies.

Not only can Ultron be airborne, using a long-range Encephalo ray to damage opponents at a distance, but his primary healing ability allows him to attach a healing drone to a teammate, who can then dive, fly, or do as they please around the match without needing to be chased around by Ultron himself. That heal has a radius for other teammates, too.

Ultron’s abilities in Marvel Rivals in full

  • Encephalo-Ray – R2/RT/LMB – Fire a damaging energy beam.
  • Dynamic Flight – R1/RB/LShift – Dash in the current direction of movement, entering an accelerated state.
  • Imperative: Patch – L1/LB/E – Commands a healing drone to follow one ally, healing all allies in its radius, with additional healing for the designated ally.
  • Imperative: Firewall – L2/LT/RMB – Summons multiple drones that grant bonus health to allies, focused on Ultron and any ally marked with the Imperative: Patch skill.
  • Rage of Ultron [ULTIMATE] – L3+R3/LS+RS/Q – Summons Ultron’s drones to fire multiple Encephalo-Rays, to damage enemies or heal allies.
  • Stark Protocol [Team-Up Ability] – Cross/A/C  – With Iron Man, you can enhance Ultron’s Encephalo-Ray to a Nano Ray ability. This Nano Ray effect can pierce characters and inflict damage on enemies while healing allies.

Marvel Rivals Season 2.5 balance changes

What would a new Season be without a bit of Marvel Rivals balancing information? Whatever the answer, Season 2.5 brings a heavy dose of buffs, nerfs, and changes.

We don’t doubt that ongoing Marvel Rivals balancing changes are tricky, with some welcome and less welcome changes emerging below. But they are essential as NetEase tries to balance the manifold challenges and hero-counters Marvel Rivals characters face. Here are the in-depth hero changes, highlighted by MarvelRivals.gg

How will Marvel Rivals Season 2.5 change the game?

Ultron sits on a high-tech throne connected by cables

The latest Marvel Rivals update will change the game in both extremely obvious and more subtle ways. For the obvious, we have the new hero, Ultron, probably the biggest impact on how teams operate and matches play out, alongside the reworks to Thor and Jeff the Land Shark. Of course, there’s the new convoy map, Hellfire Gala: Arakko, and the new Season Event, Cerebro Database II, for Hawkeye’s new, free Binary Arrow costume.

These good old content updates run alongside the character, ability, and gameplay changes noted above, and how those will impact the meta and gameplay will need to be seen throughout the season. There are also a slew of extra changes, some platform-specific, some UI, some aesthetic, and some technical, in the official Marvel Rivals Season 2.5 patch notes.

It’s probably fair to say that new characters have the biggest beneficial and increased competitive impact on the game. The new gameplay mechanics they add, and the acquiring of skills to play new arrivals like Ultron, drive the debate on the best Marvel Rivals characters and the potential for any leaked Marvel Rivals characters that may be arriving in the future, be that Blade, Jubilee, Gambit, Deadpool, or another. On the reworks, we’ll have to see.

Conclusion

Marvel Rivals Season 2.5 update will bring a lot of change, alongside Ultron’s arrival, the new convoy map, Hellfire Gala: Arakko, and a large number of tweaks and balance adjustments to shape the playing field in the coming weeks. Hopefully, Thor and Jeff are over-changed and Ultron fits in to many a party nicely!
