Netflix’s next big video game adaptation is Clash of Clans

Netflix has had huge success with video game adaptations including Arcane, The Witcher and Devil May Cry. Now the streaming giant is turning to the world of mobile gaming with an animated series based on Supercell’s Clash of Clans.

Fletcher Moules, who directs Clash of Clans’ animated videos, will serve as showrunner. Rob Weiner, whose credits include episodes of Futurama, 30 Rock and Arrested Development, will work on the writing. The animation will be done by ICON Creative Studio, which worked on Young Jedi Adventures and Apple TV Plus’ WondLa. Currently in pre-production, the show will follow a barbarian who has to navigate absurd politics and rally a band of misfits to protect their village from war.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Netflix and this creative team to bring the world of Clash to life,” Supercell head of film and TV Curtis Lelash told Tudum. “Think epic battles, immaculate barbarian mustaches, and the kind of humor our players know and love. They’ve been asking for a Clash series forever, and we’re beyond excited to finally say: It’s happening!”

Video game adaptations provide a built-in audience and it’s hard to beat the size of Clash of Clans’. Since launching in 2012, the strategy game and its 2016 real-time spinoff Clash Royale have been downloaded more than 4 billion times and played for 180 billion hours.
