Overwhelmed Beginner Looking for Advice on DIY Stair Treads

I've never done much DIY, but I'm want to try and learn. I'm working on fixing up my house to get it in sellable condition, and my staircase needs some love. Right now, it has particle board sub-treads because it used to be tiled. I want to install wood treads as cheaply as possible while still making it look nice. Here's some pics: https://imgur.com/a/NgKuCzW A few questions: Do I need to trim down the sub-treads before installing the treads, or can I just install them over the existing ones if they have a lip? Should I fill the gaps between the sub-treads and the wall before installing the new treads, or wait until after? I need to clean up and paint everything—what’s the correct order of operations? Do this all before and then add treads? Any good walkthroughs or resources? Most of what I find is full staircase builds, but I just need help with the tread part. Is there anything I don’t even know to ask that I should probably know? Any advice would be super appreciated! submitted by /u/FusRoMwah [link] [comments]

A few questions:

  • Do I need to trim down the sub-treads before installing the treads, or can I just install them over the existing ones if they have a lip?
  • Should I fill the gaps between the sub-treads and the wall before installing the new treads, or wait until after?
  • I need to clean up and paint everything—what’s the correct order of operations? Do this all before and then add treads?
  • Any good walkthroughs or resources? Most of what I find is full staircase builds, but I just need help with the tread part.
  • Is there anything I don’t even know to ask that I should probably know?

Any advice would be super appreciated!
