Some Nintendo Switch Games Are Getting Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrades, Including Breath of the Wild and Metroid Prime 4

During today's Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo confirmed that while almost its entire Nintendo Switch catalog will be playable on the Nintendo Switch 2, some lucky games are getting upgraded "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" versions with special features, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and Mario Party: Jamboree.

The benefits of all the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games differ from game to game. The first game shown on screen was Super Mario Party: Jamboree, which is getting an upgrade called "Jamboree TV". It adds mouse controls, audio recognition, "more expressive rumble", and some gameplay using the new camera accessory.

Next, we looked at Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, which are getting enhanced resolution and framerate and HDR support. They're also getting the benefit of a service on the Nintendo Switch Online app called Zelda Notes that includes voice guidance to help you find Shrines and Koroks, and the ability to share creations in Tears of the Kingdom via QR code with friends.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land was next, and it's getting a new story exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 called Star-Crossed World, alongside better graphics and framerates.

Two new games are also getting upgraded versions: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will get mouse control capabilities and 4K 60fps and HDR, and Pokemon Legends: Z-A will get better resolution and framerates.

All of these upgraded games will receive both physical and digital upgraded editions for sale. Additionally, a few of them (Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Mario Party, and Kirby) will have upgrade packs for sale that will let you upgrade if you already own the original game on Switch.

Nintendo has had us all curious about "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" games since last week, when a webpage popped up that mentioned such games in a tiny footnote related to the newly-announced Virtual Game Card system, stating that such games could not be transferred via Virtual Game Card to the original Nintendo Switch.
