The 15 Best Naked Looks From the Met Gala Over the Years

The naked dressing trend may be having a moment on red carpets now, but it’s long been a Met Gala staple for those looking to make a bold impact. From sheer illusions to crystal-studded, barely-there gowns, the sheer look has proven time and again to be a favorite for turning heads on fashion’s biggest night. In 2024 alone, celebrities flooded the carpet in a wave of see-through silhouettes and strategically placed embellishments, embracing body-baring glamour as an art form.

The 2025 Met Gala theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” shifts the focus toward craftsmanship, structure, and sartorial history. Rooted in Black excellence, the evolution of dandyism, and a reimagining of traditional tailoring, the 2025 Met Gala is expected to spotlight custom suiting, sharp lines, and gender-fluid interpretations of formalwear. While a surprise sheer moment is never off the table, the dress code suggests a more tailored, conceptual approach to fashion compared to previous years.

Keep scrolling to look back at some of the most risqué looks to grace the Met Gala red carpet over the years, including naked dresses on Doja Cat, sheer jumpsuits for Olivia Rodrigo, and more.

Cher, 1974

Cher and Bob Mackie are always a match made in fashion heaven. The singer donned numerous looks by the designer throughout the 1970s. And, much like the others, this one was full of drama. The sheer gown featured flashy embroidery and white feather trimmings on the hem and sleeves. Her look epitomized the year's "Romantic and Glamourous Hollywood Design" theme.

Beyoncé, 2015

Queen Bey knows how to work a carpet, and her skin-baring Roberto Cavalli number was quite a showstopper. The 35-time Grammy Award winner chose a sheer dress with multicolored stones and accessorized with nude heels. Needless to say, she made quite a statement—even though she was one of the last to arrive.

Kim Kardashian, 2015

Sheer and nude anything has been Kim Kardashian’s cup of tea for awhile now. So it comes as no surprise that she chose this provocative, yet classy Roberto Cavalli dress designed by Peter Dundas. The figure-hugging dress featured an open back along with intricate beading and wispy feathers on the train.

Bella Hadid, 2017

It-girl Bella Hadid has worn many enviable gowns over the years, from the custom made to archive pieces. But this time around, she opted for a sheer catsuit courtesy of Alexander Wang. The sheer black look had beading on nearly every inch, with a plunging back and off-the-shoulder neckline to finish it off.

Kendall Jenner, 2017

Kendall Jenner didn’t hold back at all with flashing some skin in this black mesh look by La Perla. The gown was almost completely sheer, featuring an asymmetrical cutout across the front and an open back. A flash of a matching black thong could be seen when Jenner turned around. Her dress was strung with a cool 85,000 crystals, according to then-creative director Julia Haart.

Emily Ratajkowski, 2019

Emily Ratajkowski is never one to shy away from showing some skin, and this Peter Dundas dress was one of her best. The custom Cher-esque ensemble showcased head-to-toe silver embellishments, a full cutout at the bodice, an open back, and a halter neckline. She added a striking headpiece with feathers and diamonds to finish it off.

Kim Kardashian, 2019

In keeping with the year’s “Camp: Notes on Fashion” theme, Kim Kardashian went all out in a look that brought the one and only Thierry Mugler out of retirement. The dress—which reportedly took eight months to make—featured a latex, body hugging corset with crystals dangling from her to appear as water. Her hair was also styled with that “wet hair” look in mind.

Olivia Rodrigo, 2021

For her Met Gala debut, Olivia Rodrigo ditched the typical grandeur gown in favor of a lacy jumpsuit. The sheer, all-black number by Saint Laurent had an off-the-shoulder neckline and feather trim. Rodrigo accessorized with matching black platforms and dangling diamond earrings.

Kendall Jenner, 2021

Kendall Jenner took a few cues from Old Hollywood with this look. The model channeled Audrey Hepburn’s My Fair Lady character Eliza Doolittle, which saw her donning a glamorous white gown designed by Hubert de Givenchy himself. Jenner’s version, also Givenchy, was fully see-through on the other hand with crystal adornment and a train.

Michaela Coel, 2023

As one of the year’s co-chairs, Michaela Coel did not disappoint with this custom Schiaparelli couture dress. The semi-sheer brown dress hugged her curves and had 130,000 crystals. One of the more covered up naked looks, much of Coel’s figure was concealed by the surrealist accents and codes of Schiaparelli. She wore toe shaped heels to complete the gilded look.

Emily Ratajkowski, 2024

Although more understated than her 2019 look, Emily Ratajkowski’s dress last year showed just as much if not more. The beaded archival gown is from Atelier Versace’s Fall/Winter 2001 collection, and it showed Ratajkowski’s entire silhouette.

Doja Cat, 2024

A sheer dress? Try a sheer t-shirt dress. In 2024, Doja Cat turned heads in her unusual take of the year’s “The Garden of Time” theme and on the naked dress. The Vetements dress, designed by Guram Gvasalia, was quite a reinterpretation of the typical white t-shirt into a sexy, wet dress.

Kendall Jenner, 2024

Last year, Kendall Jenner donned quite the archive pull—one that hadn’t been seen or worn for the past 25 years. The dress hails from Givenchy 1999 Haute Couture by Alexander McQueen and was quite striking. It included a plunging neckline and a V-shaped panel of sheer fabric that showed the midriff and hips. The top to bottom black beading and cascading fringe added to the regal gown.

Elle Fanning, 2024

Elle Fanning’s semi-sheer look at last year’s Met Gala made her seem frozen. The transparent Balmain gown had an off-the-shoulder neckline with flowers perched on each side and a flowing skirt below the sculpted bodice.

Greta Lee, 2024

Greta Lee’s Met Gala debut last year showcased a dainty, yet unique take on the naked dress. The custom Loewe design had intricate white lace with embroidered three-dimensional flowers and a high neckline that narrowly obstructed the view of her face. Lee’s architectural dress was quite a stand out piece.
