The Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 — and there will be rollback netcode.
During the PlayStation State of Play earlier today, it was revealed that Digital Eclipse will be releasing a collection of classic Mortal Kombat titles for the PS4 and PS5. This includes the original Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat 3 Ultimate and Mortal Kombat 4, as well as the handheld and arcade versions.
“We’ll take you back to the glorious 1990s, the days of arcades and tokens, of hidden Fatalities and secret characters, with the original versions of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3,” the PlayStation Blog announced.
“But we’re not stopping there – many of the home versions of these games from vintage 16-bit consoles and, yes, even handheld systems are also included.”
Perhaps the most exciting part of the announcement was that the Kollection will have online multiplayer with rollback netcode, meaning the FGC can compete against one another online in these classic titles. This will bring back the old-school feeling of competing against one another in the arcades when the games originally came out.
According to Sony, the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection will also feature a lot of hidden content that was available in the original games.
The blog continued: “Mortal Kombat games are full of secret content – some gruesome, some downright silly. In the 1990s, finding these secrets meant buying physical strategy guides, tying up the phone line while connecting to America Online, or relying on unreliable rumors heard at recess.
“We will give you open access to everything in these games without need for hidden codes or memorization. How will we do that? Uh… that’s still a secret. But it won’t be for long.”
There is currently no release date for the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection. All that is known is that the collection will be coming out later this year. There will be more information released about the collection ahead of its launch.
Alongside the upcoming collection, Digital Eclipse is putting together a documentary about the iconic fighting game series. Digital Eclipse recently traveled to NetherRealm Studios to interview Mortal Kombat’s Co-Creators Ed Boon and John Tobias. There’s also a current ‘deep dive’ into documents, early prototypes, motion capture sessions, concept art and more.
