This Half-Life mod reimagines the horror of the Great War trenches
Along with the original Doom, Half-Life is generally regarded as one of the most influential first-person shooters of all time. That alone is enough to cement its place in gaming history. However, the continued efforts of the modding community also helps keep Valve's classic in the limelight. In this instance, we're being transported back to World War I, thanks to ModDB user eyeling. Although it's not out yet, "In Mute Witness Stand" is a different take on Half-Life, with it being set in the trenches during the Great War of 1914-1918. Image via eyeling/ModDB While the mod can be described as a reimagining of the horrors of the war, there's definitely a sense that "horror" is more what the creator is aiming for here. As well as being able to face off against the Germans, you'll also be fighting against an "army of the dead." Also rabbits and rats, for some reason The mod itself – which will have both singleplayer and co-op elements – puts you in the shoes of the good old-fashioned "British Tommies," battling against the forces of evil, with eyeling saying that some of the maps have been based on real-life battles and locations, such as the Charge at the Somme and the First Battle of Gaza. You'll come up against such "post-living" foes as Undead Tommies (I think the image above shows one of them), as well as Trench Crawlers, which are said to "feast on dying soldiers." Of course, this is a WWI simulator as well, so you'll also be having a bit of a set-to with the German army, which includes snipers, landmines, and artillery. It seems as though this mod is aiming for a sense of realism in terms of warfare, but with a nice dollop of the supernatural thrown in there for good measure. It certainly seems like it's a far cry from what we come to expect from a Half-Life game at any rate.
