A Minecraft Movie Reveals Its Villagers and Fans Are Horrified

Warner Bros. has shared a new trailer for A Minecraft Movie, which reveals the live action rendition of the beloved game's Villagers, and fans are absolutely horrified.

The live action treatment of Minecraft has so far proved controversial at best but another wrinkle arrives with this trailer, below, ahead of its full debut at the 2025 NBA All Star Game, as fans have described the Villager as "cursed" and "possibly the dumbest thing I've ever seen."

The trailer featured a brief but good look at two Villagers, who aren't played by actors like Jack Black's Steve but instead are animated in the style of the world's animals. The humanoids therefore retain their blocky shape but, unlike the fluffy bees or feathered chickens, Villagers are made up of rugged flesh.

"What the f**k are these things?" asked DinoBoyGamer on a Reddit post discussing the Villagers. "Realism and blockiness do not work together," added Real-Report8490. "Possibly the dumbest thing I've ever seen." Several Minecraft fans independently used the word "cursed" too. "Maybe we treated the old live action Sonic design too harshly," declared Bobo3076.

A Minecraft Movie was revealed proper in September to immediate criticism, with fans calling out a disparity between the live action characters and the green screen generated animated world. One fan even remade the trailer in a fully animated style.

The director and producer said they were well aware of this reaction when speaking to IGN in November, but promised they "were ready for everything."
