Adding new kitchen cabinets: why does my cold air return have a metal plate partially obstructing it inside?
I'm adding cabinets to my kitchen, and am about to extend a cold air return from the wall to under the toe kick with a toe ductor kit. The cabinets are going to make the original duct opening inaccessible, so before I install everything, I want to figure out what this horizontal metal piece is doing inside my cold air return. It seems like it's potentially reducing the air flow, especially when I first opened it and everything was covered in cobwebs. I won't be able to easily clean it again once the cabinets are installed, so I'm wondering if I should cut it out before I hook up new ducting to it? Is it serving a purpose? I've been trying to search online for what it is, but I don't even know the question to ask, and I'm not finding any similar designs at home improvement stores. As you can see in the photos in the link above, the piece can be bent up slightly with a finger, but I'm certain will definitely not stay that way once air starts flowing down. If it matters, this return is very close to the hot air vent in the corner (retrofit HVAC design from probably the 70s trying to make due in a 120 year old house). I've got two toe ductors on the way (1 for each) and I'm going to try and space these out a little further and try to point the hot air vent slats away from the return. submitted by /u/xerxes_fifield [link] [comments]
