Nicole Kidman Honored at Cannes Women in Motion Dinner as Stars Turn Out in Style
Kering’s annual Women in Motion dinner brought out stars like Dakota Johnson, Paul Mescal, and Charli XCX to honor Nicole Kidman for her commitment to gender equity in film.
Despite the ban on naked dresses and gowns with long trains on the main red carpet, fashion at Cannes Film Festival events has still been pretty naked. Such was true Sunday night at Kering’s celebrity-packed Women in Motion program where stars like former L'OFFICIEL cover star Nicole Kidman (who was honored), Dakota Johnson, and Charli XCX opted for see-through looks.
Kering’s Women in Motion program spotlights the women shaping the film industry—and this year, all eyes were on Kidman. She wore her blonde hair pin-straight, paired with a red-hot lace column dress by Balenciaga, styled by Jason Bolden. When receiving this year’s top honor, she used her acceptance to reaffirm her longstanding commitment to gender equity in filmmaking.
The dinner was a celebration of progress, but it was also a fashion moment in its own right. Charli XCX’s sheer purple Saint Laurent gown made waves, and so did Johnson’s Gucci moment: she rocked a sheer and open-back dress that was fully embroidered with crystals and beads. Halle Berry's Gucci look was similarly transparent and embroidered. Guests in menswear, like Paul Mescal and Jeremy Strong, nailed the dapper look. Acrose the board, ensembles were bold, elevated, and glamorous.
With Cannes' naked dressing ban applying only to red carpet premieres, stars took full advantage of the freedom to experiment with more risqué outfits after hours.
Kidman's win Sunday night was years in the making. In 2017, the actor pledged to work with a female director every 18 months. Since then, she's worked with about 27 female directors, including projects still in development. Known for her powerful roles in films by many of the industry’s most revered male auteurs, Kidman has recently prioritized collaborations with women, adding her voice to the push for lasting change in Hollywood.
