Riot Games originally intended to release League of Legends with just 20 unique champions but eventually doubled that number leading up to launch day on Oct. 27, 2009. Now, 15 years later, there are a whopping 170 playable characters in the game.
Mel Medarda, a Piltover councilor and mage from Arcane, is the newest member of the League family, having arrived in early 2025 after the premiere of the Netflix show’s second season. Before her release, her own mother Ambessa hit live servers in November 2024, challenging foes in the top lane and making her grand appearance on esports stages across the globe.
