Elephant Mountain in Taipei, Taiwan

Just one kilometer from Taipei 101, the former tallest building in the world, lie the rolling hills of the Four Beasts Mountains: Tiger, Leopard, Lion, and Elephant. Though none of these animals exist in Taiwan, locals named the hills based on their resemblance to animal forms. Among them, Elephant Mountain is the most famous and one of the most well-trodden trails in Taipei. The most accessible trailhead for Elephant Mountain is a 10-minute walk from Xiangshan MRT Station (which literally means "Elephant Mountain"). After climbing a few hundred steep steps, hikers arrive at the Six Boulders, the most famous viewpoint. From here, visitors get a breathtaking panoramic view of Taipei, especially an up-close perspective of the high-rises in Xinyi District. Due to its incredible views and easy access, the trail has become hugely popular, so expect a wait if you want the perfect photo on the boulders. During Taipei 101’s New Year’s Eve fireworks show, photographers and spectators flock to the mountain to capture the ultimate shot of fireworks bursting from the skyscraper. For those looking to explore further, a short walk from the Six Boulders leads to Elephant Mountain’s summit (about 180m elevation). Beyond this, hiking enthusiasts will find a network of trails featuring viewing platforms, rock formations, rich ecological areas, and even defunct coal mines. The trails connect to Thumb Mountain, 95 Peak, and Section 6 of the Taipei Grand Trail, offering extended adventures for those wanting a deeper dive into Taipei’s urban wilderness.
