Focused on the Normandy Breakout, Call of Duty 3 has an expansive campaign that allows the player to experience the stories of multiple soldiers during the Second World War. Like the first two mainline installments, Call of Duty 3 included online multiplayer, plus players could now pick their own class.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

One of the most notable Call of Duty games ever, the first Modern Warfare tells the story of the soldier Soap MacTavish. Unlike previous entries, Modern Warfare isn’t set during World War II. A multiplayer mode was implemented as well, which helped solidify Call of Duty’s presence as a competitive FPS franchise. COD 4 introduced iconic Call of Duty characters to the series, which is one of the core reasons it’s remembered so fondly by fans.

Call of Duty: World At War

World At War popularized zombies mode in Call of Duty, though it also included a full campaign and online multiplayer experience. An American and Soviet campaign were both in the mix, while Nazi Zombies allowed players to hop into a wave-based mode filled with undead soldiers.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

A direct sequel to Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare 2’s campaign continued Soap’s story while also introducing new playable characters. Multiplayer mode added a variety of modern maps, equipment, and gameplay mechanics – a significant update from the first Modern Warfare.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Black Ops has a Cold War slant that differs dramatically from the themes of previous Call of Duty titles, especially Modern Warfare. The main character, Alex Mason, must face many combat challenges to survive throughout the action-packed story. Multiplayer and zombies were both implemented in the first Black Ops, so it features a wealth of content to experience, including a trip to the moon.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

The final entry in the original Modern Warfare trilogy, MW3 is considered a turning point in the Call of Duty franchise. Though it continued the Modern Warfare story and included new multiplayer content at launch, it’s remembered especially well for its Special Ops mode, which was a wave-based experience similar to zombies, but with soldiers instead of the undead.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

BO2 is the first of many sequels to the original Black Ops. Set in 2025, Black Ops 2 has a futuristic theme, but without advanced movement like double jumping. The second Black Ops title included a single-player campaign, online multiplayer, and an expansive zombies mode. It pushed zombies to new heights by adding special mechanics, including a rideable bus in the Tranzit map. Black Ops 2 was also the COD game used for the first Call of Duty Championship in 2013.

Call of Duty: Ghosts

Call of Duty: Ghosts is the 10th title released in the mainline series. Boasting a fresh story and new multiplayer maps, Ghosts transitioned Call of Duty into the next generation of consoles, including the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Ghosts also launched with the Extinction mode, which placed players up against hordes of terrifying cryptids.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

The first mainline title with futuristic combat, Advanced Warfare introduced double jumping and other advanced movements to the Call of Duty franchise. Like previous installments, Advanced Warfare was released with a campaign, multiplayer mode, and a special addition: Exo Survival. As Advanced Warfare is set in the middle of the 21st century, its general themes differ from those of every other COD game up until this point.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

Black Ops 3 continued to improve upon the Black Ops formula with a new story mode, a fresh take on zombies, and online multiplayer. The combat in Black Ops 3 is also futuristic, so it’s faster-paced compared to previous entries in the series.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

Infinite Warfare is the final Call of Duty with advanced combat, and it even added to the futuristic theme with new ways to move. Space-based locales and equipment were heavily present in Infinite Warfare, presenting a fresh concept for Call of Duty in general.

Call of Duty: WWII

As a breakaway from the futuristic COD trilogy, WWII returned the franchise to its roots with boots-on-the-ground gameplay. WWII has a story-based campaign, multiplayer with various competitive game modes, and new maps for zombies. War was an online multiplayer mode with team-based goals, and it acted as Call of Duty: WWII’s most innovative addition.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Black Ops 4 completely switched up the Call of Duty format by removing the campaign and replacing it with a secondary online mode. Alongside the arena-based multiplayer and traditional zombies modes, Black Ops 4 also contained Blackout – COD’s first battle royale. Though the lack of a story mode was a disappointment for many fans, online players enjoyed the heavy focus on multiplayer.

Call of Duty Mobile

Call of Duty Mobile launched in 2019 as a free-to-play game for phones and tablets. The main appeal is the multiplayer and battle royale modes, which are both similar to the online experience in mainline COD entries.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)

Though titled Modern Warfare, this game is isolated from the original MW trilogy. It contained a campaign and multiplayer mode at launch, plus Modern Warfare 2019 brought back Special Ops. The total reboot of the Modern Warfare series paved the way for two sequels in the following decade. The Call of Duty Modern Warfare release date was a big day for FPS fans worldwide.

Call of Duty: Warzone

Though Warzone originally launched in 2020, it has evolved significantly over the last five years. Warzone is a free-to-play battle royale game that updates alongside mainline Call of Duty releases. A subsequent release titled Warzone 2.0 in 2022 is considered by many to be a sequel, though the COD battle royale is now simply titled Call of Duty: Warzone.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Black Ops Cold War brought players directly into the Cold War via online multiplayer, zombies, and an all-new campaign. This title had a particular interest in showcasing historical figures and expanding on the traditional Black Ops formula with new weaponry.

Call of Duty: Vanguard

Vanguard took Call of Duty fans back to the World War II era to engage in special campaign missions and a thrilling multiplayer scene. Zombies are also present in Vanguard, continuing the tradition of an undead battle mode with spooky magic and powerful artifacts.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022)

A continuation of the Modern Warfare reboot, the second entry focuses on a campaign with modern combat, an online multiplayer experience equipped with an updated selection of maps to explore, and Special Ops. The reintroduction of Special Ops in Modern Warfare 2 was especially popular, as players got to engage in fast-paced combat in an expansive suburb in the middle of the night.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023)

Modern Warfare 3 is a love letter to fans of the original MW series. Captain Price makes a return as a story character, while non-linear missions also made their debut in the MW3 campaign. Instead of a Special Ops mode, Modern Warfare 3 has a zombies experience which allows the player to join forces with other teams. Like with previous CODs, MW3 features an in-depth multiplayer aspect that places you up against enemies online on a variety of remastered maps.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

The newest Call of Duty game, Black Ops 6, was released in October 2024. It features new ways to traverse the map with omnimovement, an expansive multiplayer mode, multiple zombies maps, and a campaign set in the 1990s. Though it isn’t the most innovative Call of Duty, BO6 has a large player base compared to previous COD titles, partially due to its presence on Xbox Game Pass.

New Call of Duty in 2025: Expected release date for the next Black Ops

Activision hasn’t yet announced the next Call of Duty title, but there are rumors floating around that could prove to be true. According to FumoLeaks, details about COD 2025 were revealed by a focus group participant. Insider Gaming has since confirmed some of this info via their own sources.

If the rumors prove true, then Call of Duty 2025 is a sequel to Black Ops 2. BO2 is one of the most popular Call of Duty games in history, so it’s no surprise that Activision would want to return players to their favorite story. Insider Gaming also conveyed that the time period would likely be around the 2030s, offering a futuristic theme. Fan-favorite maps could even be remastered, according to Insider Gaming.

Though the new COD release date isn’t set in stone, Call of Duty fans are expecting it to release between October and November 2025, as that’s typically when Activision releases new COD games. If that timeline pans out, then fans can expect an announcement sometime this spring or summer. Unfortunately, the new Call of Duty release date is still up in the air.

The Call of Duty franchise will only keep growing

The Call of Duty franchise already has over 20 mainline games, and it doesn’t look like Activision will slow down anytime soon. New iterations of Modern Warfare and Black Ops will continue to be released for the foreseeable future, if recent leaks are to be trusted.

As Call of Duty expands, new mechanics and gameplay elements will be added to shake up the traditional formula. If COD fans are lucky, Activision will release another 20 games throughout the upcoming decades.
