How photography influencers lie to you

Do you really need the all the gear that photography influencers are egging on you to get? Photographer, filmmaker and YouTuber Hunter Scott says you most likely don’t, and he explains why in the video above. Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS) is real, and it can often get you wanting stuff that are either off your budget, or you eventually find too complicated. After the initial interest wanes off, maybe you’ll realize you can’t put them to good use like your favorite photographers do — at least, not yet. So that gear ends up shelved and forgotten, and you end up wanting another that you think would let you take better photos. The cycle can be pretty vicious. Apart from this scenario, Scott also notes that from his experience, the best investments are usually not the ones you’d expect. “Often, it’s not even camera gear-related at all,” he adds. Of course, he also explains what these are, and why they matter to your craft instead of what photography influencers are convincing you to get. That said, Scott also acknowledges the fact that the right photography gear and/or accessories are worth spending your cash on, and they don’t need to break the bank. So, have you ever fallen into the trap of GAS, especially with the persuasion of photography influencers? Alternately, have you found any non-gear stuff that were worth the investment? Share your thoughts in the comments below, you could help out some fellow photographers!
