In The School of Stüssy Tears, Every Student Has Style

I’m not sure what school Tremaine Emory, founder of Denim Tears, attended in Jamaica, Queens. However, based on the latest Stüssy x Denim Tears collection, inspired by Emory’s high school days, his fellow classmates knew how to dress.

The latest selection from Stüssy x Denim Tears (or Stüssy Tears, for short) is a 17-piece apparel and accessory collection. And true to the collection's theme, it is a blend of preppy school attire with sporty gym gear.

But Emory hasn't only created uniforms for a fictitious school, he's also established a fictitious school club: the Jamaica Spades Club. There's even a blazer bearing the emblem of this spades club.

Alongside the Stüssy Tears motif, a combination of Stüssy's double S logo with the Denim Tears cotton wreath, references to the card game Spades are inventively placed across the collection.

Look more closely at the formal houndstooth wool duffle coat, for example, and you’ll notice the houndstooth pattern is made up of the spade card symbol. Meanwhile, on a black cardigan, each button has the symbol of a different card.

Even Stüssy’s signature 8-Ball logo has been tampered with, presenting the spade symbol on the black pool ball.

Of course, Tremaine Emory wouldn’t create a typical, one-dimensional school-inspired collection. If you’ve ever heard Emory speak about his designs, you’ll know that every detail is deliberate, pointing toward a larger narrative he’s created.

His latest release, together with regular collaborator Stüssy, will be available from February 14 on both brands’ websites, select Dover Street Market locations, and select Stüssy chapter stores.

February 14 is also the day that Stüssy’s New York chapter store opens.

Stüssy is really blessing the people of New York this week, collaborating with a local favorite designer and opening a store in the Big Apple.
