L-Desk project: Help needed for a first-timer

I'm planning a budget L-Desk for my house, since the ones i've seen online seem super cheap and not worthed the money. I've little to no woodworking experience though, and same goes with power tools. This is what i had in mind: L-Shaped Desk I was planning to buy 2 cheap boards from my local home improvement store, it sells 2 main options i was considering: Boards of laminated spruce wood, 59" (L) × 23.6" (W) × 1.06" (T). Boards of laminated spruce wood, 39.4" (L) × 23.6" (W) × 1.06" (T). First of all i was unsure if it was better to buy one of each type and join them, so, as per my drawing, so ABCD+DGFH, or 2 big ones and make them cut both at a 45° angle, so ABCH+CGFH. Would the second be a sturdier option? Is the thickness enough for a decent desk? i don't aspire to have a good one, just one that doesn't bend or break too easily. Since i have no proper woodworking tool i was thinking of joining them with dowels and glue, and then maybe add some steel brackets under it. Could i avoid putting a leg on the H point? would the joint be enough? Am i missing anything else? Is it all wrong? Maybe i am embarking on something too hard for someone with no experience, but i really wanted to try my own. Thank you for any suggestion or advice! submitted by /u/cloro92 [link] [comments]

I'm planning a budget L-Desk for my house, since the ones i've seen online seem super cheap and not worthed the money.

I've little to no woodworking experience though, and same goes with power tools.

This is what i had in mind: L-Shaped Desk

I was planning to buy 2 cheap boards from my local home improvement store, it sells 2 main options i was considering:

  1. First of all i was unsure if it was better to buy one of each type and join them, so, as per my drawing, so ABCD+DGFH, or 2 big ones and make them cut both at a 45° angle, so ABCH+CGFH.
  2. Would the second be a sturdier option?
  3. Is the thickness enough for a decent desk? i don't aspire to have a good one, just one that doesn't bend or break too easily.
  4. Since i have no proper woodworking tool i was thinking of joining them with dowels and glue, and then maybe add some steel brackets under it. Could i avoid putting a leg on the H point? would the joint be enough?
  5. Am i missing anything else? Is it all wrong?

Maybe i am embarking on something too hard for someone with no experience, but i really wanted to try my own.

Thank you for any suggestion or advice!
