NetEase has released a new balance patch for the popular hero shooter, Marvel Rivals, addressing some of the biggest issues plaguing Season 2.5.

From character buffs and nerfs to Team-Up tweaks, this is everything changing with the latest patch and how it could affect the esports scene.

In the official patch notes, Marvel Rivals development team wrote: “Even the mightiest heroes need an adjustment every now and then. Whether it’s providing a quick exit strategy, getting a moonlit boost, or making sure Jeff chews before he swallows! It’s time for another round of heroic tweaks to keep the battlefield as epic (and balanced) as ever.”

This time around, only one Vanguard character has seen adjustments. Thor recently got a soft rework to his kit, and now he is receiving a small buff. Awakening Rune can now be manually cancelled in order to regenerate Thorforce early.

Duellists got the most attention in this balance patch. Moon Knight has struggled in recent times as one of the worst Duellist characters this season. Therefore, he is getting a small health boost from 250 to 275.

Star-Lord has long dominated as one of the best Duellist characters in the game, with many of the best Marvel Rivals Fight Night players using Star Lord to reach high damage numbers. This time, however, his range for his elemental guns is receiving a buff. The maximum damage fall off at 25m will now only reach 65% instead of 60%.

Storm has also steadily become more popular with Season 2.5, and the developers are hoping to address one of the more oppressive aspects of her kit, the Omega Hurricane ultimate. It will see an increased energy cost from 3100 to 3400.

The final changes addressed the new Team-Ups that were introduced with Season 2.5. Here are all of the changes summarised.

  • Chilling Assault: Luna Snow (Anchor) and Hawkeye
    • “Reduce damage from 30 (120 max at 30m) to 25 (100 max at 30m). Reduce the stun duration for enemies hit beyond 30m from 1.5s to 0.8s and Spell Field Damage range from 3m to 1m.”
  • Jeff-Nado: Storm (Anchor) and Jeff the Landshark
    • “Increase time required to devour enemies from 1.2s to 1.5s.”
  • Rocket Network: Rocket Raccoon (Anchor) and Peni Parker
    • ” Increase Armoured Spider-Nest cooldown from 20s to 30s.”

Will Marvel Rivals Season 2.5 Balance Patch Affect Esports?

Jeff-Nado was initially added as a community-requested feature according to the Season 2.5 Dev vision. However, it has become incredibly dominant in the highest ranks of play. It has been commonly used in events such as the ongoing Marvel Rivals Ignite tournament and some of the more recent Rivals Fight Nights.

This is an interesting development considering that community sentiment surrounding the Jeff the Landshark rework was that he was significantly worse than he was before. The raw damage this Team-Up can unleash has been the shark’s only saving grace and the only reason he ever sees professional play.

Nerfing both Storm’s energy cost for the ultimate, on top of increasing the time it takes to devour enemies, should help make it less oppressive. Even so, only time will tell if this will be enough to discourage players from using the Team-Up, or if it will remain as a powerful tool that often decides the outcome of a team fight.
