Nacon is going all-in on Cthulhu with two new Lovecraftian games
Though Nacon exists firmly in the AA niche of the modern gaming industry, the company mas made a name for itself with the likes of RoboCop: Rogue City, which is an incredible game. Now, Nacon has announced not one but two unique new Lovecraftian titles as part of its future lineup. Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss and The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu are seemingly entirely unrelated projects that both exist under Nacon's publishing umbrella. Revealed as part of the French publishing company's recent Nacon Connect 2025 event, these two titles betray what looks to be a more pointed focus on Lovecraftian storytelling, which honestly could go either way. Whereas The Cosmic Abyss seems purpose-built for fans of single-player experiences, Omen of Cthulhu is a four-player co-op survival experience. Say what you will, but there's no denying that Nacon is keeping all of its options open in this respect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRDCm5f1zxc The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu and Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss are coming out in 2025 and 2026, respectively Neither of these two games is being made by unknown studios. The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu is being developed by ACE Team, a small-scale production that proved its mettle with none other than the legendary Zeno Clash. ACE Team is known for its weird, out-there games, with The Eternal Cylinder being the studio's most recent release. If anyone can deliver a genuinely strange and compelling Lovecraftian survival game, it's ACE Team, I reckon. Omen of Cthulhu is due to release later this year, which means we can expect more information about the game to pour out in the coming weeks and months. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThN3eSfWqUo As for Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, this game is being penned by the people behind The Council and Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong, Big Bad Wolf. Obviously, Big Bad Wolf has a far less colorful portfolio than ACE Team does, but I'll go out on a limb here and recommend The Council to fans of intrigue and espionage. It's a narrative-heavy adventure game that goes into some really surprising topics, and though it's not perfect, it does remain compelling throughout. The Cosmic Abyss, too, is a dedicated single-player adventure game. I'm particularly excited about it because it may be the first time we've actually seen R'lyeh proper in a video game. The story is set in 2053, and players take the role of a chromed-up occult investigator as he looks into strange disappearances at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Granted, The Cosmic Abyss is an Unreal Engine 5 game, which may be a bit of a bummer if you're anything like me. All cheekiness aside, this is an extremely exciting project, even if only based on the developer's pitch for the story, though it won't come out until 2026 at the earliest. In other tentacle-related news, you may have heard that The Sinking City 2 has finally made it over to Kickstarter, going well over its funding goal with almost a full month's worth of funding left to go.
